Was talking with the two teenage boys over the weekend and we wanted to build some r/c sailing ships and after an internet search we found this whole world of r/c warship combat and the AOS here was fascinating. It looks like it is a big enough leap to make the sailing combat happen that there were never enough to really get events going? Just curious if this forum is out of date or if there is a better place we should look. Obviously the non-sailing combat is also awesome but the sailing combat was the thing that really caught out attention. We previously lived in Boston and the USS constitution was the favorite of my boys growing up so super curious about the status of this effort.
Unfortunately I think Age of Sail combat isn't getting off the ground any time soon. Building a multi-masted RC sailing ship is a very complex undertaking, and adding working cannons and damage control on top of all that is an order of magnitude more complex. Then there's the challenge of location. Most current combat ponds are not suitable for age-of-sail combat because they are relatively sheltered from wind. This results in the sort of slow and unpredictable winds that are terrible for square-riggers of any sort. I haven't completely given up, but I have other, higher priorities.
