I can't quite tell from the photos you listed but if I'm not mistaken, most 12g CO2 cartridges are unthreaded and require a holder of one form or another to facilitate their use while 16g cartridges are threaded and can thus be used with the appropriate adapter (no holder required).

HMS Abdiel uses 12g, they're unthreaded, I use the adapter BC sells for them. I have a BC 50 round straight mag cannon with SS barrel and I get 54-57 shots a capsule. Bob Pottle if I'm not mistaken used 16g in his 1 gun ships HMS Gorgon and HMCS Prince Robert. He's still away but can probably provide some details when he returns.

Main reason I went with 12g was because I can go to the nearest Canadian Tire Hardware and buy a box of 40.
