Has this idea ever been put into play? Aircraft carriers with small rc planes that other people control that has little guns on them or bombs of some sort. The object would be to sink the other teams aircraft carrier.
Nope never thought of that! j/k Most people suggest that when they are first starting off, size is typically the issue. If you can do it, go for it... but planes are on the order of 3"
I was not going to build an Aircraft carrier for my first ship i was just interested if anyone have done this idea before. Right now i am looking into building a ship for big gun as that seems to be the most enjoyable.
First off, find the club nearest to you and see if you enjoy their kind of battling, as a single armed ship is only fun for so long... Secondly, if you stay with a scale that can actually be modeled, carrier wise, the airplanes will be far too small to contain a mechanism to do damage to a ship, along with severe difficulties just getting them to fly. There would also be wind and other problems scaling down.
I'm on record stating that I'd pay to see that! As a practical matter, aircraft can only go so small. That means that the carrier (as well as the pond it sails on) needs to be pretty big! There's also the matter of each aircraft needing a radio channel, not to mention people who are trained & experienced in carrier ops, to fly them! Starting engines would be an issue, so you're almost forced to go with electric aircraft. I'd use a "video LSO" for landings, consisting of an aft-facing video camera with a transmitter back to a monitor ashore. You might be able to get 4-6 planes in operation at once. Working elevators to bring planes up from & down to the hangar deck would be a cool touch, but I'm sure things would be a mess below. There are also issues with firing guns of any kind from aircraft, for very good safety reasons. Even if you could do it with anything approaching any sort of accuracy, actually damaging a target is another matter. R/C combat ships are designed to be penetrated from the sides, not above. Another issue that most people don't think through is the impact that functional, effective carriers & aircraft would have on what is basically a gun-oriented, surface warfare game, assuming that they can get everything to work in the 1st place. I've been to some battles where somebody brought a R/C aircraft (or a go-fast boat, or even a sailboat) just for fun, & every time it happens almost everybody drops whatever they're doing to watch the aircraft fly around. It's just too big of a distraction from the battle itself. The carrier would become "the show", & it really does deserve to stand on its own apart from a surface ship battle. A fine spectacle it would be, & one that I'd pay good money to see if somebody were to do it. Just keep it away from an organized ship fight. JM
As you can see zombie, very complicated. In fact, wait until you have a few years and/or ships under your belt before you start experimenting
guns/bombs are not legal on rc planes. you could drop stuff out the belly once but it is now illegal. and those planes were big enough to give a cat a ride in just to carry a egg or 2.
i dont think there is much you can do with aircraft carriers unless you could have some sort of shooting plane that dropped a torp into the water, the logistics of it would be very very complicated, and i doubt it would ever be effective in a small scale battle aircrafts are effective because of their range can fight without being attacked by the battleships in most cases the planes carry large payloads and have high accuracy. all of which is removed in RC combat. so i dont think it would be a verty effective ship. but fun none the less if you could get it to work.
