Hello all! I was wondering if any of you have used an "airfoil" type rudder on your SINGLE rudder ships & if you noticed any improvement it turning? How wide did you go? What overall shape did you use... teardrop or wedge?
While we're here is there any more information now on the flat leading edge/round leading edge debate?
Is it all just a bunch of hooey?

    Thanks everyone,
    Harry Hollins

At Big Gun speeds, there is no noticeable difference except (possibly) for destroyers. I have not tested that yet. Rudder throw, prop arrangement, and weight distribution had much more significant effects on all my ships. I don't know about Fast Gun speeds, though.

At fast gun speeds, noticeable difference. I haven't quatified it, but I can see a difference even on single-ruddered ships. Not nearly as great as on twin-ruddered ships, but still there. I run around a 6-1 length to thickness ratio, more or less. A little more length on small single rudder designs.

I use the airfoil shape on Bismarck and it turns great.
