You need to figure out why they retired, if its something that can be fixed then they could come back; if not, then its not worth your effort trying.

If you know them already, just contact them as a friend.
If you don't, then you need some "non wierd" way of getting a hold of them. You could cold call them & be very direct; or you could come up with something indirect... like hold a unique inticing battle or a non battle (like a party or guys night out) get together where all members current & past come to shoot the breeze.

Tell me more, who else has ideas?

Well, I can't think of any other ways to contact "retired" members, but I can think of a few examples.

Example 1: Some captains retire because they are no longer physically capable of operating and maintaining a battleship. This may be from back injuries, old age, or any number of reasons. The solution the WWCC has is to get them a destroyer, light cruiser, or pocket battleship. This is actually one of the causes of the rising number of killer torpedo-armed cruisers, as more people invest in these ships the research and development into them yields terrifying increases in reliability and effectiveness.

Example 2: Some captains retire because they change jobs, and their new schedule no longer permits them to attend battles every second sunday of the month (or whenever your battles are scheduled). The solution the WWCC found was to schedule an event or two on alternate days. We usually do this on Labor Day Weekend, so that club members in Oregon can drive down, fight a battle, and drive back without major hassle.

Example 3: Some captains retire because of personal conflicts with other club members. This is especially unfortunate because its usually a single member alienating several others. The WWCC has yet to find a satisfactory solution to this problem, and it has caused several major schisms throughout model warship combat history.

Regardless of the reason (including None Of The Above), you shouldn't be afraid to contact anybody. Maybe the situation leading to their retirement has changed. Maybe, all they need to get active again is to have somebody contact them & let them know that they're missed.

What's the worst that could happen? Nothing.
