But because i'm still so new with this, and My dad Dosent know how to build her either, I was hoping a lot of you Can give us Some ideas on how to build her!! But the First thime I saw was she has 19-Ribs on eachside, and she has to have 12, and I'm not sure how to chance that?? Any Ideas!!! But on my last post is the link to the photobucket photos ok! Nikki
Hi Nikki, if you could take a couple of pictures and upload them, that would be a great help. Thanks!
Nikki - there are different rules on the ribs depending on who you will be battling with. Do you know what rule set you will be battling under?
I would highly suggest finding and reading the rules for the ruleset you plan on battling in. Since you mentioned IRCWCC, perhaps a visit to their web site and reading the rules on construction may be the best thing to do before starting any work.
The IRCWCC construction rules and the Treaty constructions rules are the same for the ribs. You can have no more than 15% blockage and you are allowed no more than 2" solid area in the bow and 1" in the stern. So the Andrea Doria is 577' long. In 144 scale that should be 48". Is this correct? 15% of a 48" ship is 48*0.15 = 7.2" So you can block 7.2" of the length with solid area. From this length you have to subtract the solid area in the bow and the stern: 7.2 - (2+1) = 4.2" left for ribs. A good size for ribs is 1/4". The number of ribs you can get using a 1/4" width is 4.2 / 0.25 = 16.8 If we round the number up, then we would exceed the allowed blockage, so we have round down - therefore you can have 16 1/4" ribs. In both IRCWCC and Treaty your ribs must be at least 1" apart, but other than than rule you can pretty much arrange them where you want. If you were to space them out evenly, then there would be (48 - 3)/17 or 2.65" between the centers of each rib. Deciding on the number of ribs and where to put them is only the first step. I strongly recommend that you attend a build session somewhere and have a veteran help you layout the windows or at least check them before you make any cuts.
Mark, That's how she was in WW1 and in WW2 she was longer (613)! also I guy i got her from already has them Layed out, but i might just put white tape over it and re-do the ribs that way!!! Nikki
Just saw the pics you posted- I would be going crazy if i had a table covered in war material like that! Good luck on your ship build. the IRC is fast gun correct?
I took a second look at the pictures and now I see the rib outlines. It looks like the ribs are closer together towards the front and spaced further apart towards the back, which is what I typically see if the ribs are not just evenly spaced. For the lengthened version 613' = 51" so 15% = 7.66" total blocked area. After subtracting the 3" for the bow and stern you have 4.66" left for 18 1/4" ribs. If they were evenly spaced they would have 2.5" between centers or each window would be 2.25" wide. Is the line at the top 3/8" below the deck and the line at the bottom 1" below the waterline? The proportions in the picture don't quite look right, but it could just be an optical illusion.
Mark, That's cool! I might just put white tape over it and re-do the ribs that way? What do you mean by this: It's still 18 1/4" ribs? I'm just wondering?? Nikki
Guys, Stubid ME, Two Fridays ago when it was so hot here in Pittsburgh, I left my bedroom door open, and had Doria setting on my dresser and didn't have rubber band on the dock either! My two sisters cats: Brace and KT got in to it and knocked her off the dresser and chipped part of the bow off! But how do you fix a chipped bow, any ideas?? I found three Free stand Srorage shelves and want to see what you guys thing of them! i need to do this in two Posts! Nikki
Chop the cats up fine and epoxy into the chip with west systems epoxy. It will fill the holes and keep the ships safe from further damage.
hey guys, I was looking to the rub cal. and Doria at 3/8inche rubs, she'll get 12 and at the moment she has 19! I was looking at get white tape to put over the hull, but i was wondering what you guys thing, and are there any idaes? Nikki
