I always get mine at Walmart. The Daisy silver ones in the 4000 bb container. They are a lot better then the copper ones, less rusting. I just bought another 16,000. I started the year with 20,000 and was down to the last 200. That's a lot of battles...

It used to be more common, though I am seeing it less and less frequently. Mostly the decline in "mom and pop" type hardware stores accounts for it I think.

Copper is fine. Your shots might be slightly less powerful because the copper plating is less dense than steel, but the effect would be negligible. It would be nice of you to check if the copper ones can stick to a magnet, because many skippers remove shot from inside their ships with magnets.

    say what??

    copper less dense than steel??

    steel is around 7.8 gm/cc
    copper is around 8.9 gm/cc

anyways....copper bbs tend to be less "perfect", not that regular bbs are perfect but they do tend to be better for whatever reason. The copper ones would probably penetrate better in theory due to the extra density of the copper but in all practicality you arent going to notice a difference. Since they are just copper coated steel they still stick to magnets so thats not an issue. they both work ive had plenty of holes shot into my hull by both types.

The silver Daisy ones are more round and uniform than the copper-coated ones. Using tight-tolerance stainless steel barrels, I've had the copper ones jam on me.

I think Carl was kidding about marginally less powerful :) Unless he meant it in the sense that "when you throw a ping-pong ball at a steel girder, the steel girder will deflect under the load". 8)

I think it was Carl simply being wrong. It happens every once in a while. Or he knows something about steel-copper allows that I don't. How well do zinc-plated steel bb's work?

I'm not sure how accurate that statement is. There are two types of daisy silver BBs. The competition grade and the standard grade. The competition grade BBs are far superior to the regular Daisy BBs. The competition grade BBs are made to a uch higher tolerance then the standard grade BBs. The regular daisy BBs occassionally have a "large" BB which I have seen lead to jams. The copperhead BBs seem to be a slightly smaller diameter (and not necessarily uniformly round) which are oh so slightly less accurate and powerful.

That being said, I use the copperhead BBs. I tried and didnt like the standard daisy silver BBs, and I see no reason to upgrade to the competition grade BB and spend more money. Frankly, the copperheads seem to work well enough and not cause any jams I have ever seen.

Of course, to each his own though; any old BB as long as its new (don't shoot your enemy's ammo back at him!) will work. Choose which ones you like best.

I'm pretty sure how accurate it is. I wasn't claiming a particular line of bbs was bad, just "copper jacketed", by which I meant the plain old BBs they've sold for eons. Sorry for the imprecision. The silver colored competition ones are what I feed my guns because I use SS barrels with a .180 ID, and some cheap BBs have jammed.

Yeah, that was just me being stupid. Forgot my chemistry, never did too well there anyway. In reality, as long as your guns don't get indigestion from their ammo, you're fine. I make it a habit to return my opponent's shots to him, no matter what condition they're in. I've fired a few torpedo volleys that were more rust than real ball, and my cannons handle it just fine. Then again I'm firing Big Gun torpedo cannons, specially designed to digest anything sent their way. Fast Gun cannons are a little more sensitive, methinks.
