Okay so here is a question I haven't seen. What seems to be the popular choice for below the waterline paint? I originally tried to find a red primer, unforuntaly the closest I could find was a rust color. Instead I used a red enamel, which after reading the rules it says specificaly no and also after my first battle it seems that the paint may or may not have made my Balsa siding a bit brittle. So that brings me back to the question of what do most people use. I know Bob H. just uses the grey primer all over, so what else is out there?

I paint all my ships with walmart red and grey primers. The coat is so thin it usually wears away before I am painting it for the next battle. I even spray the paint out and use a brush.

I've never seen red primer at walmart...I've never seen red primer at all anywhere.

I got mine at Home Depot. Just a cheap can of primer from the paint aisle.

OSH has a very nice "colonial red" paint. It's not too rusty, it's not too pink, it's a nice dark red.

For paint type, you don't necessarily have to use red primer. You can spray the hull with grey primer, and then paint the underwater sections separately afterwards.

Not every ship has a red hull either. Some are dark green or blue.

Did the patching now work as well? or did it just show up better?

the sigment turns white/yellow when dry and the silspan is white.... on a black background.... same as on red. Unless you get red tinted nitrate dope... then it looks great.

I use a red oxide primer spray can, and patch with hand torn silkspan, nitrate dope and a brush. The dope tends to melt the paint a bit, and the repair ends up coloured with it. The hand torn patches have a feathered edge which blends in better than those cut with scissors.

On the black you couldn't see the holes to patch them

As long as it's an axis ship, I have no problem with that. :))
