    Hi folks.
Just sussing out what the general consensus is on ship speeds.
Here in Australia we allow the Jean Bart 32 knots but I've been looking at the rules and books on her and while she did 32 knots on trials I think she may have only been capable of 30 knots sea speed. Not sure wha tthe US consensus and rules are on trial speeds but thunk't I'd ask and see what the general consensus is before I get in hot water over here. Intend to bring it up at the next meeting for a comparison and to level the playing field regardless. I think she hit 32.?? knots with 172000 horses for a few hours if that, whilst Goeben here gets relegated to 25 knots but I think should be allowed a few more like 26/27knots. And Goeben after her refit in the 50/60/s pegged 28 knots for longer than Jean Bart did 32.
Keep up the healthy discussion folks, great website and always fun to look into.

    Ahoy there Cat,

here in the WWCC, we go by the fastest available speed in Conway's. So if the Conway's stat box says 30 knots but the text description of the ship says "made 32.5 knots on trials", then you go with the higher number. If, a paragraph later, you see "made 34 knots for a short period during such-and-such battle", then you get to go 34 knots.

That is the same way we did the speeds in the Midwest Battle Group.

not a bad way to go I suppose, just makes it hard for boats like mine that were laid down but not completed. I've got a WW2 lion, same length to beam ratio as vanguard but smaller, same power, shallower draft, lighter by nearly 8000 tonnes but same speed by our rules, such is life.
We say trial speeds don't count but how I read the blurb on Jean Bart is that the high speed she has is a trial speed but they've put it up in the specifications area so it's been read in as the true speed even when they admit down the page it was only for a few hours, not a sustained period and it was on an overload power rating 17000 horses above what she'd normally run.
    darn them french surrender monkeys!

Hey, there's gotta be SOME disadvantage to using hypotheticals. That there is no real-world data on their speed performance is one of those disadvantages. The idea also helps forestall debate on some ships that never got a chance to really show their stuff. Here's an example of what this avoids:
    http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?94665-About-Bayern-s-speed...

A few guys are arguing that the Baden, listed at 22 knots, should be capable of 23 or 24 knots, based on German fleet organization, comparisons to other German ships, engineering standards, hull waveform analysis, etc. What a pain.

I wonder if there's a way to regulate speed based on historic SHP and power flow to the motors, instead of shooting each ship with the radar gun. Then there'd really be incentive to keep your ship in good condition...
