I've started building my first ship, Jean Bart. I'm posting my first rib template, so hopefully any mistakes can be caught before I make the same mistakes on the other 19 ribs. Thanks,
    -Joe

This is hard enough without my stupid mistakes; which one doesn't belong?

Well, the bottom rib looks a little strange with the notches on the inside. One word of advise, make sure all your slots for the keel are the same size. So if you were going with a 1/4" by 1/4" slot, make sure they are all that size. I didn't make sure mine were all the same size, and it did make some headaches later on.

Keep posting pictures of your progress. We all love photos. :)

I did mess up on one of the keel slots, which was just one reason I started over on the ribs.

Yes, but I didn't put it on the ribs because I didn't know how.

I don't worry about it until I get the hull assembled, I worry that skinny parts in the middle will break when slotting everything together. It's really easy to use a saw or Dremel and cut a water channel in the ribs after it's all epoxied together and strong.

That's good, this project is giving me enough to worry about without worrying about the water channel!

Do the ribs just like you are and cut the channel out later. Lots of people do them that way and they work great.

I can't work on the hull right now, so I've been thinking about the other components, namely the guns. I'd like to build them myself, and I figured it would be good to get an early start. I was hoping to build a more effiecient cannon, and I was wondering about the stomper cannon. I've have heard of it, and it sounded like it was exactly what I was looking for; however, I can't seem to find any information about it. Does anyone know anything about it?

Never heard of that system. I will have to ask the guys in the club. most ppl use the same basic rotating gun system and you can purchase the plans for them at strikemodels.com

How much experience do you have working with a lathe? You got to be careful making these cannons because they take time a skill, most people buy used ones off others or if they know someone who is in the mood to spend the time to build them. They are pretty complex in my opinion. I suggest linking up with someone in a club near by and get their take on them.

I have no experience with lathes, I know someone who does, who hopefully will be willing to help. I was thinking I might have the magazines lazer cut. It's hard to say if I'm capable of building one, since I've never seen one in person or seen plans for one. I've looked, and haven't seen any for sale. Of course, 1/4 inch quads aren't very common, just the Richelieu class (and Alsace), right?

All I know about the stomper is what I've read here; it was one of J C Whites later inventions, there are only two in the world and they are 1/4 inch quads, and apparently only J C White knows how to make them, which could be problematic since as far as I know, nobody knows where he is. It is a super efficient negative pressure closed breech canister gun, an operates at about 65 psi.

@glaizilla - (I sent you a PM, but I'm assuming you didn't receive or haven't read it) do you mean rib templates, or actual ribs?
