Hey everybody, new guy here - building a 1945 HMS Puncher; a bogue class escort carrier. I'm using rcengr's design, and it's going...ok I suppose for a first build. He suggested some parts that aren't exactly easily gotten up here in Canada.

    His list was:
    GWS brushed motor set, a DX 370 with a "B" gear ratio (4.43:1) - which I assume is a 350 with a 370 motor
The battery was a 6 volt, 12 Amp-hour gel cell.
Electronic Speed Control (ESC). I use a Mtronics Viper 10. This setup will drive a 1.5" prop.
If you want to keep it in the back you need a small servo. The mounting hole will fit a Hitec HS82 servo. I recommend the HS82MG, which has metal gears. The rudder is the rectangular 1" x 1 1/2" part.

Here at greathobbies (local) they recommended a
    Proboat PRB2314
A larger servo (1:10, 70-80oz torque) - he wasn't convinced the 40oz would be able to hold?
    and 2 7.2v 5a batteries.

Thoughts? His suggestion/question was also regarding the gearing - he thought that if you have a speed control, you wouldn't need a gear box, that you could simply direct drive it. Knowing nothing about this stuff, I welcome suggestions.

The direct drive means that to slow down the ship you alter the ESC speed settings / Throttle endpoints on radio vs changing gear ratio's. The advantage of the gears is it allows the motor to run at a higher rpm (where it's more efficient) for the same speed while giving you more torque to the props. Either way works, just a matter of preference (and availability!).

Rudder servo... just make sure the hobby store one is same dimensions or you may have to do some cutting & filling...

40a Proboat ESC is probably way overkill. It would work, but you could use something cheaper.

The batteries should do the job.

    Hope this helps.

proboat esc has an issue with reduced power reverse. 40% if I remember correct

If you must use that (I don't), make the reverse your forward setting, that way you can slam on the brakes and really reverse. Of course, going forward again will suck...

Hobby Kings international warehouse (Hong Kong) would be the cheapest, and probably quicker to arrive.

    (I live in Canada also)

Ok, so it looks like strike models has what I need so far - so I've got the viper10, the servo, and the prop - but then that's where the wheels fall off.

I wonder if it's just easier to get the
HDW-DD-ESCHardware Pack for Destroyers, class 1 (includes Micro Viper 10)

    And a hg82 servo.
Then I think all I'd need is a remote and receiver. Problem is, I have no control over motor and gearbox. Thoughts?

Now I know why we did that. Thought it was an airplane thing.

I've been thinking of these for my Mogador DD, direct drive. These low rpm "pancake" style motors have a lot of torque for their size. Might be a good choice for your little Bogue direct drive. I tried different pancake motors in my DD, they worked great except for weak brushes. Provided excellent get up and go. Hoping these different motors will have better brushes.

You can get ten of them for $10 here:

Electronic Goldmine - (Pkg 10) Heavy Duty 12VDC Rewinder Motors

FYI, direct drive works best with low rpm high torque motors. The 370 motor your looking at is a high rpm motor that will work best with a gear reduction.

or go brushless and don't worry about torque or brushes, just current.

    Tugboat and Beaver like this.
