There is a battle in Missouri May 26-28 at Farmington. Check out http://mwci.org/eventlist.shtml for the information.

Your best option is probably try to start one yourself by promoting the hobby with friends, neighbors, schoolmates, and so on. Then there would be a group of very local people battling that would make it easier to attend battles.

Some travel is usually expected in model warship combat. I usually travel 5 - 9 hours to attend a battle. You are fortunate to have battlers in your state to contact and battle with. :)

Frankly, there is far more people from the eastern half of the US in the hobby than California.

Unless you can gain interest in your area, expect to travel for a battle. It would be really good to get your parents/guardians involved in the hobby. Perhaps not as battlers or ship builders, but as a family taking trips to other places. I know one family that takes advantage of every trip to a battle to do other things in the area where the battle is.

Inherited? If only it was. Otherwise I wouldn't have entered the military during the last big depression (1980s) because I didn't have enough money to go to college. Nor spent 26 years in the military serving overseas (including both Iraq wars) to get my degree and make sure my children will get theirs. Nothing inherited other than the work I put in to make sure the family is financially secure before finally joining the hobby.

My advice? Do not be in a hurry to jump into the hobby. It is a time and money investment. Go slow and take care of your future first. If you have time and can spare the money, work on a ship slowly over time. Get out and see a battle if you can. Even if you cannot make this Spring's Missouri battle, there will be another one in the fall to attend where you can talk to other hobbyists and see the ships. Believe me, we love to talk and show off our ships. :)

Let your father know that this hobby is a great opportunity for quality father and son time. Many fathers in the hobby share it with their kids by working on ships together, going to battles together, and even as incentive to take care of other things first like school and such. :)

There are very few things in life that are easy and worthwhile. If this is truly a passion of yours, then do your bookwork and planning. I would recommend looking at becoming a friend of a club regardless of the distance. The advantage of affiliating with a club is gaining the knowledge base and lessons learned from those with a lot building experience. I know in that in my group, MABG that there are club owned ships that bounce between members and new Captains. These ships require some repairs / refitting. Perhaps there is a similar system in your area. Good luck in your endeavors.
