I am having trouble finding foam that Frank Pitelli used to use in his smaller combat ships years ago for his water channel. The foam came in sheets and did not have to be sealed. If I remember correctly it came in sheets 1/4" think. I used it years ago in my Doria. I'm having the devil of a time trying to find it.
you might check out mcmaster.com part number 93745K47. It was noted that it was used for weather striping, so you might check there in a home improvement store
The type I use is made by GE Polymer. I can't remember the name but it's black and comes in 4' x 8' sheets 1/2" thick. It's probably available in other thicknesses. Bob
I used the foam for knee mats or mini seat pads. I got them from a Dollarama store. No waterproofing necessary and very very cheap. Easy to cut too with scissors or Xacto
Heh, I have a newbie question regarding the use of foam mats as water channelling as that's the same stuff I'm planning on using myself. The foam floats. So, at what point do you cross the line from mere water channelling to actually increasing buoyancy which, I beleive, is not allowed? I mean I've seen some pretty substantive water channelling installed on some ships. Worst case is my water channelling fills half the free spaces and not only adds buoyancy but actually limits the space water can flood into. (more foam channelling, less room for actual water) I'm assuming that a simple bottom channel would be fine as long as you don't go overboard on it or start layering the foam up higher?
Technically, everything increases buoyancy as long as it displaces water. Where you will run afowl of the rules would be if you added enough that you could not completely sink.
As greg has stated ,you can add as much boyant material as you wish as long as the end result is a negative boyancy ship that will go to the bottom.Just remember the higher your equipment and batteries are from the bottom sheet the less stability you will have side to side
Hi Mackster. Well the foam certaintly can slow things down a little but not by much. Remember the Musashi in Frederiction. It is packed with the foam more than what I have in Yamato and very tight yet it sank quickly. The foam will slow the descent to the bottom of the pond but either way it will still go down
