Does anyone know what the least amount of money you would need to get into a treaty ruleset would be?

That really depends on how much work you can do yourself. If you've got a lathe, mill, router, sander, have experince with wood working or fiberglassing, and how much electronics experience you have.
I haven't started on guns, which are looking to be the most expensive thing yet, and here's what I spent:
    $120 for a hull.
    $70 for a radio/reciever.
    $108 for motors/shafts/stuffing tubes/propellers
and $80 in balsa, dope, glue and silkspan (which I'll be able to use for a long time, not just the initial setup.)
So $378 for a gunless ship. Guns I'm starting to price right now, and It's looking to be around 200-300 dollars for CO2 tank/Regulator/and Barrel & solenoid.

But that doesn't cover the cost of my dremel (which I bought for my boat, but bugeted as an around house tool, and it's come in handy a bunch of times.) I've managed to borrow all the other tools that I needed. aaaand I fried my first reciever, so that cost a bit to replace, but i like the microcontroller I replaced it with better

I'd say If you bought a nice cheap esc you could cut that motor cost in half.......,

A lot of that depends on a ship. For example, a crusier with 2 guns would be much much cheaper then battleship with 5 or 6 guns.

In general, buy a used ship. Most battlers do not sell a ship for as much as they have in it.

I have a SC sitting in my garage with three working guns, motors iinstalled, rudder installed, three servos, popet valves. and the owner is asking $200. It is a used ship and needs a bit of work, but I tested the guns, and ran the ship in my pool (using my own radio and ESC)

The SC is a nice ship to run and learn to battle with.

I would agree with purchasing a used ship.
It would get you on the water faster.

If you don't find a buyer for it Marty, I'll snap it up. It was the first ship I ever ran, and it's got a little sentimental value.

Funny enough, the first ship I ever ran was a South Carolina owned by Tim Krakowski. He let me run it during a 2007 fall battle. Sooo ... I went out and picked up a set of plans for that class. It's on the To Do list. :)

I got my butt kicked in that ship, but it wasn't the ship's fault. I just didn't have the first idea of what I was doing yet. I'd like to think I'm a lot better battler now!

I have no idea how to insert photos into this message but I did put one photo in the ships gallery, under "Pav's SC. I have others of the interior and guns but you will have to email me and I can send them to you.

Kind of depends upon what you want to use and how much you might have around the shop! Speed control can be a servo ($19.99) and two radio shack micro switches. Radio can be as expensive or as cheap as you can find. CO2 Bottle and Reg. can be bought from Strike or Battlers connection. Pump can be home made or bought. Guns and equipment is already in the boat along with props, motors, rudder.
