Hi, I am retired, recently widowed looking for something to fill my time. I am interested in using 3d printer for making ship models. I spent 5 years in the Navy, 3 years on F-16 assembly line and 30 years as a mailman. I started on a model of the heavy cruiser Houston, a long time ago, but my wife helped me lose interest. She's not here anymore to tell me how expensive it is, how I don't have time for it, etc so I'm looking into buying a 3d printer and either using my phone or buying a scanner to scan and print a model of the ship I was on. If that works, I will see where it leads me.

    Howdy there!

So, from West Texas as in Kolaches, or as in semi-arid wasteland?

I'm not sure how viable it is to make a model of the ship you were on (you didn't say which), and currently there is no 3D model available for printing a Houston, but there are 3D printable ships and ship pieces out there for your enjoyment. Hang around here a bit and ask questions, I'm sure people will be willing to help.

Kolaches my wife was from here, I was stationed on the U.S.S. Moinester FF-1097, I have some models of it, 1/700 and 1/350. If you remember the lava lamps, that looked like waves at sea. I was thinking about scanning one of my models, 3d printing it and using it in the wave machine, right now, I'm just trying to get an idea of what's involved with 3d printing, amount of detail, type of filament etc.. I also have an interest in toy soldiers, 12 inch action figures like the ones I wanted as a kid but never got. Civil War, Cavalry/Plains Indians, WW2, some of the Marx 12 inch articulated figures. I also saw the Dallas Rc ship big gun combat club had a meet Oct. 18 up in Dallas. Just looking for a hobby to fill my time. I saw one of the 3d printing facebook sites had the files for the Black Pearl. Last movie I actually went to the theater to see, was the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie, another subject I'm interested in. When I was looking for sites that had something to do with 3d printing, this site came up and since I have had a little to do with rc ship combat, thought this one would be one of the ones I gave a look

Welcome. One of my long term projects is a 3DP RC model of a Knox Class in 1:96. My Dad was a plank owner of USS McCandless DE-1084. I'm working off of a discontinued laser cut kit. Perhaps we can work together to build some?
