Hey guys, I just got back from the shop and finished the post-nats refit on Fuso. After observing Lide's Fuso tear things up in the furbal, I decided to move my bow sidemount back to the aft 'Q' turret, in effect making it another stern sidemount. Not quite a haymaker though (dang!). I'm curious how others have set up their ships, and get a discussion going about gun layouts and such as we have a couple new guys building boats looking for all the points of view they can find. So let's have it! Where do you put your sidemounts?
In a 5-turret DN, either: 1)Twin sterns, and a sidemount in X turret and Q turret, or... 2)Quad sterns. Blows a big ole hole when you have them lined up in square pattern And X & Y twin turrets are good for that. ('course thats no sidemounts)
Gun position is always a trade off. In the cast of the Fuso, the option with two sidemount in aft, creates some problems. When attempting to catch someone, your cannons are in a difficult location to shoot them. Also in a more open type battle, lack of bow mounted sidemounts can be a problem, as you don't have a sidemount on each end. With Fuso, you may be able to mount an extra cannon, then switch between, as conditions require. Some people find bow mounted sidemounts difficult to use. This is often true because they don't understand what their function is. With the usaly greater range of the bow sidemount, it is often possible to stand off out side the other ships range. For some discussion on cannons and their uses: http://www.scrapcombatships.com/commodore/tactics/tactics.html I don't really agree with all the points made there, but it makes a good starting point. A stern sidemount is better than a bow sidemount, except when it's not. And forget the quad option in Fuso. The upper cannons would have a different line of fire, and would prove to be inffective. You would really have two set of twins. Also, with no sidemounts a Fuso would be a target.
In my Nagato: Twin sterns - 1 15 deg and 1 14 deg to port Starboard haymaker both bow guns aimed to port converging at about 10" The angled stern guns tend to surprise people
