I'm Zach I've seen pictures and videos of this sport for years and just never found the right way to get started in it but finally found out about Battlers Connection and here. I'm a mechanic so my building skills are pretty good and I was into 1:4 scale stunt planes for a year or so.
I'm about to start ordering parts for my first vessel but need to find a group around me I'm in Springfield-Dayton area anybody around here I need to figure out the rules and gun class to go with? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated!

Hiya Zach. Welcome to the hobby. :)

You are at ground zero for the Treaty guys. The person you need to speak to is Mikey Deskin. He lives just north of Dayton and routinly holds build sessions at his place. Hooking up with him and the guys in that area is probably the best thing you can do. I highly recommend talking to him and attending a build session before starting a ship. I'm sure he will chime in when he sees this thread. :)

There is a Treaty section here on RC Naval Combat that has all the rules for that format. Since it is the closest format to you that can offer relatively local battles, it would be a good idea to build for Treaty.

Finally, feel free to ask questions here too. I bet there is literally hundreds of years of expirience within the hobby from all the people that visit this web site. That is a huge resource to draw from. :)

    Welcome to the "Obsession"!

Thanks can't wait to get into it I grew up and work on boats so its like my backyard. Treaty it is! time to do some reading so I can get an idea of ships and guns used in treaty...
Cool I live less then 20 minutes from that area I'll have to get in touch. From what I've found this is definitely the best site for info and getting started. I've been reading around for a few days now but nothing like talking to the veteran Captains.
"Obsession" is a good way to put it haha.

You may also want to check out the MWC as well as they do have battles in your state from time to time also. Chris Au would be your contact.

By no means did I intentionally leave out other contacts. Mikey just happened to be the closest to Zach. :)

    Hey Zack,
You may think this is piling on here but I'm just down state route 40 in Bethel Township north of Huber Heights. Feel free to get with me anytime. I also battle Treaty. Regardless of who you contact you won't meet a nicer bunch of guys who are willing to help.

You are indeed in a very active area for this hobby.
Chris is in Hinckley, Ohio up near Cleveland. He hosts both fast-gun, and Treaty battles. Roland is near Akron. He is Treaty.
Buddy and the Buckeye Battle Squadron is in Newark (just east of Columbus). They are Treaty as well.
I think they are hosting a build-session this weekend, and they have a two-day battle coming up the first
    weekend in October.
There are almost a dozen Treaty captains in the Dayton / Cinci and surrounding areas.
There is a two-day build-session this coming weekend in Miamisburg, and a two-day battle coming up the last week of October
    in Xenia.
Quiote a few of the folks are on here, so I am sure you will have plenty of answers to any questions that you may have.
If you already have a favorite ship that you plan to build, then that is a good starting point.
If you have not already decided on which ship to build, then dropping in at some build-sessions, and battles will give you a chance
to meet the other battlers in your area, and see what the current teams look like.

We also have the 96th scale Battlestations format growing in our area. So if you like the idea of rotating turrets and such, that may
    be something to think about.
So welcome to the hobby, and this site.
    Happy hunting.
    Mikey

Awesome I'm in a good area then in the middle of the groups. I actually do have ships in mind a Baden or Konig but I'll have to see after I attend a build session or two and a battle since I still don't know much about the ship classes but the construction itself besides the rules that go into building them should be easy to me. I need to contact some of you so I can join in on a build session or just hangout and start getting to know everything, I'll probably send out some messages tonight.
@froggyfrenchman, I've heard about the 96th setups and yeah I do like the idea of rotating turrets makes for more intense battles and advanced ship designs I bet.
@Boatmeister, not at all I also airsoft/paintball/bowl/sail so I'm used to the piling last time I was at an event we had 600 people.

Eric's definitely the guys to talk to then. I think he's closest, and he also has a Konig class battleship, the Markgraf. He's very interested in the WW1 era german stuff, and can get you going in the right direction, and like I says...has one of the ships you're interested in that you can look in the hull and see what's what.

Yep for sure crzyhawk I already got in contact with him.
Right now I'm really bouncing between ships but of course I'll have more of an idea of what I want sail after getting some hands on :plain: then again knowing me I'll build something good for battling and to get me started then have something on my workbench that will take forever to finish and not meant for beginners... Got my eyes on a Montana or H-39 to fill that spot :whistling:

Eric is certainly the German expert aroud here. He has plans for the lot of them.
As to building something that is good for the combat first. That sounds like a good plan.
As to the Montana, and H-39 later. That sounds like crazy talk. Only a madman would build a boat that big.
You sound like you will fit in nicely aroud here. Well done. Haha.

Haha thanks Mikey that's not the first time I've heard that!
I love having long projects and also something you don't see everyday instantly a Yamato came to mind but I'm not a Jap liking fellow so I turned to a Rodney but I noticed it isn't on the Treay ship list so Montana or one of the other behemoths like an H-39 & Sovyetskiy Soyuz are in my sights... This is going to be a fun hobby.

You can build a Rodney in Treaty - we even had one launched this year. The ship list goes by the class name, which is the Nelson in this case. It would be nice if the ship list included the names of all the ships in each class, but that required more time then I was willing to put in.

That's awesome and good to know. I need to brush up on my naval history I would of remembered that 2 years ago... Ordering a set of Tashkent & H39 patterns today to build them during the winter months also is there any places to read up on the different parts of ships explained? units, class #, speed, ect.

The Treaty Rules found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/treatynavalcombat/files/ would be a good start for (units, class # speed, etc). For everthing else, this site can or does pretty much cover it all. If you don't know or can't find it ask :)
