I was watching some vids on youtube when I stumbled onto a video showing a model warship battle. I was immediately hooked and after reading up on it some more, I figured I might as well give this hobby a shot. I've built a few plastic models before, but nothing with wood. Does anyone have some advice on where I can buy a battleship kit? My first choice would be pre-1942 Pennyslvania class such as the Arizona.

I am a SoCal newb as well.

I started with this http://www.rcnavalcombat.com/Forum/tabid/58/aff/566/aft/441667/afv/topic/Default.aspx so that I could get an idea on how to build a ship, without costing me alot of money.

I believe this Saturday SCRAP is having a battle in Chino at Prado lake. Im going to try to make it, havent been to one yet.

Calidus, Strike Models will be at the SCRAP event at Prado Lake on Saturday, and Stephen can help answer any questions you have. You can check out our website at http://www.strikemodels.com. We're based in the San Francisco Bay Area, but do make it down to a few of the SCRAP events each year.

I read too fast / didn't have enough lunch yet, and missed that there were two different people from SoCal on this thread.

Calidus, scratch-built hulls are certainly cheaper than fiberglass hulls. At the event you'll be able to see a variety of ships and talk to the people who build and run them to get some ideas about what will work best for you. We (Strike Models, run by my husband and myself) do have parts we can sell you, but we're not down there to turn the event into a sales pitch, and I realized that my previous message may have come off wrong.

@Keri awesome, i believe I have actually talked to your husband about the DKM Lutzow kit, which is one i have been really considering. I would really like to take a look at some of the stuff since I have not seen any of it in person.

If there's anything in particular you want to see, send Stephen an email today so he can bring it on down with him.

    Welcome.

I would suggest that before you attempt to build a ship, join a club.
There are different scales and combat formats to choose from.
BIG GUNS, Fast Guns, Queens Anns, etc.
Find the format and club that you like the best.
A club will give you the best support in building a ship.

    Again, Welcome, and Enjoy.
