Hi, I've been reading the forum for a while now and finally decided to join. I don't have a ship but am planning on building one sometime. Any advice on getting started would be greatly appreciated. Beaver
My best advice? Dont try to reinvent the wheel. It's been my personal experience that the most reliable ships are also the simplest.
Hi Nikki, I live near the town of Lewisburg. That about four hours away from Pittsburg. =( This hobby sounds like a lot of fun. Hope to get a ship on the water soon. Thanks for the advice Darren. Beaver
Welcome to the site and the hobby. You are in a good area for the combat. Thee are a few captains near you already. I am sure that they will chime in as well. Hook up with them and try to put together some build-sessions locally so that you can all see what your interests are. There are some folks in the Erie area, but I am not sure how active they are now-a-days. You just missed the BBS battle in Newark, Ohio last weekend. But there are more battle just around the corner. April 20-21 Versailles, Ohio (Treaty/Battlestations) May 5-6 in Hagerstown, Md (IRCWCC). May 5-6 in Milford, Indiana (Treaty). May 24-27 in Xenia, Ohio (Treaty/Battlestations). To list a few. There may also be a battle up near Cleveland, Ohio in the next couple of months. And the folks down in Ga. battle almost year- round. I would suggest that you look into purchasing a used boat from someone, so that you can get on the water and battle sooner-than-later. Then you can build whatever you want as time permits. Happy hunting! Mikey
mikey, the Dates are: May 3-5 in Hagerstown, Md (IRCWCC). and May 4-5 in Milford, Indiana (Treaty). Beaver, again welcome! I'm the contact person for PA, as I'm the Only active Member of the MNCC.. So If you need anything Message me on here ok! Nikki
Beaver, Looks like you are pretty close to the IRCWCC people as well. You should join the IRCWCC email list (Go here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/IRCWCC/). There is also a website @ http://www.ircwcc.org. IRCWCC is of course one of the two main fastgun groups, the other being MWCI (http://www.mwci.org). As for used ships, keep an eye on the "For Sale" forum here, as well you could also ask on the IRCWCC email list if anybody has a ship they would like to sell. Is there anything in particular you are looking for?
Thanks for the info. hmmm, Well I think I'm going to build a ship now, but I was thinking something like Suffren or a New Orleans class cruiser, somewhere in that ballpark.
Beaver, If your just stated out, I would say Get a fiberglass hull, But then again I don't as All the wood working tools that a lot of the guys have!! Nikki
Beaver, Checkout Tugboat's thread on building an Edgar Quinet: http://www.rcnavalcombat.com/Forum/tabid/58/afv/topic/aff/566/aft/441667/afpg/4/Default.aspx You can apply the principles he uses to build the Edgar Quinet to pretty much any ship. I used that thread to put together my Dunkerque hull.
Also check the Port Polar Bear for sale page if u want to:http://www.portpolarbear.com/For%20Sale..htm
Hello Beaver, and welcome to this wonderful hobby for building go about it by your building skill. if you think you can manage a scratch build then do that but if not i highly suggest a fiberglass hull it will cure a headache for you if you dont know what you doing. And i know where Sunberry is i live in Spring City about 15 min from valley forge. so your most likely an hour and a half away from me. When your building and need any type of help this is the site for you. post any help and we will help you through the way and will probably learn a few pointers. Anyway keep posted and i will be looking forward to seeing your build status.
HI, Thanks all for all the advice guys. I'm staring the paperwork on my first ship, a Suffren class cruiser.
