My name is Malcolm, im from North Carolina. I have been looking around the site for a while and now im getting ready to build my first ship. I was thinking of doing a
Sumner/Gearing class ship. Since some have said it was on the easier said. I
was wondering if anyone knew where I could get the plans, or frames and subdecks for it.

Welcome aboard Malcolm. What group are you planning on battling with? You may want to hold off on making a decision on which ship you would like to build until you know what ruleset you will be using.

Well Malcolm, in a Big Gun format such as we use here in my area of VIrginia a Gearing Class Destroyer would be around 32 1/2 inches long and a little less than 3 1/2 inches wide at the beam. Not a lot to work with in my format.

No. Its easier to get stuff right in a larger ship like a battlecruiser. Destroyers are small, difficult, frustrating and expensive.

Well there is a Ron Hunt from Greensboro, NC with the Tarheel Attack Group. He is on this forum and you may want to contact him. For a Fast Gun ship I would recommend something like a Des Moines class heavy cruiser ship is almost 60 inches long and has a beam of 6 1/3 inches good space to work with and not a lot of armament.

I am currently about to finish building an Iowa class battleship hull. It is 74 inches long. You should check out the build thread Wisconsin Build Diary.

The nearest battler to you that I know of is Rob Stalnaker who lives near Concord. He just got through hosting two Nats back to back. We do both ircwcc and mwci format. As far as a ship if you really want to stay small and light and american I would recommend a light cruiser like the Atlanta, the gearing is really fast and tippy which means you will probably sink a lot with very little or no damage. A Light cruiser would have a second gun and can be a lot more effective than a destroyer if you aim both of them at the same spot aft. Typically small cruisers and destroyers accelerate well, but have a wide turn radius compared to battleships and battlecruisers.
