I have been eyeing the model warship hobby for a very long time but never really decided to make the leap... now I've decided.
I am single so there is no nagging wifey to complain about me spending a few dollars and making a mess of my apartment building a ship... I guess my appartment is now a Dockyard?
I am a particular fan of the Warspite, and the Queen Elizabeth designs... Just find they look quite good, and for the most part historically anyway they seemed to take abuse well from other ships, and seemed to dish out damage quite well. I know that the actual battle ships were different than the model combat ships so many of the advantages and disadvantages of the various prototype ships don't really apply here. However, reading the various forums I think the QE class boats do fairly well in R/C combat?
My understanding is a bit skewed so far. I believe a Warspite/QE would be classed as a 5 ship? One pump, four guns... I saw reference to possibly five guns?.. I am not sure. Can someone exchange a gun for a pump? Just wondering....
I ordered plans from Moskie in Poland? I don't know when they will arrive. I plan to build it using wood frame... planked too in order to get the shape.. I am going to reveiw some of the informaion in the forums other people have posted.

I guess I will have to start a build thread as it seems my intro is basically me blabbering about building a boat. A quick internet search has found that there are no combat groups here that I know of, but there is a model boat club... so... I figure I will show up at the pond when the tiny sailboats are racing... and just start blasting away.... NOT! Although it would be fun to do until I got arrested.....
Anyway.. I guess that is my intro right there... a psycho-crazy-ship-loving... ahh.... guy.....

My next build is a QE. Where are you located?

Looks like he is in Victoria, BC. He'd be closest to the guys in Washington state.

    Yep...

I think most folks in Victoria, at least those born here would be a bit offended by this hobby. "What! you aren't recycling all those bb's!"

Hey silly question I know... but do you all use lead or stainless steel BB's? I don't even know if I will arm my ship anytime soon if there is nobody to battle. I know that there are laws about shooting BB guns in the city.. Do you guys all have to go out of town to battle? We have this pond downtown that model ship builders use a lot. I live a short distance to the Ocean..but I don't think there are many fresh water ponds nearby... I imagine salt water does more damage to a model than fresh... Might be OK to just putter around in the salt water... but not cool to sink a RC boat in....
Yes... I do live in Victoria BC....

    Hmmm....

Upon closer examination after reading a few group forums, google maps shows almost no ponds nearby. I am however very close to several access points to the actual Ocean....?

Chase, have you heard from Jay? Didn't he move out that way?

bugler: welcome aboard. Legality of our mass delivery systems vary by location, but pretty much everyone plays in more 'out of the way' locations, if only for reasons of safety.

As for running in salt water.. that isn't a thing I would personally want to do. It really increases maintenance requirements to keep the boat flushed clean. There's also a matter of recoverability - if you sink or lose control off of your ocean beach, are you going to be able to get your ship back?

    Hi Nick...

Yes! You are correct I thought about that idea... boat sinks in ocean... how deep is the water? The water here is clear so depth could be hard to judge. Also there are tough sharp barnacles on the rocks that cut feet etc... Also.. yeah.... SALT... probably not good for the electronics.....

Yes... BB firing... I think within city limits that sort of thing isn't going to fly well.... My ship will probably do a lot of dry dock duty in my living room on a shelf except for those rare days a friend can drive me to some fresh water local.....

if you run your ship in the ocean everything would have to be epoxied and you would need to flush the ship with freshwater every time you used it as well as have waterproof boxes for all your electronics rather than only waterproofing.

plus currents could really play havoc on something as light as a scale ship and doesn't take much of a wave to swamp a small ship.

but on calm days and if you know the currents ( look at the bottom if you can see it and if it's sand based look at the wear lines) it would be pretty awesome to go puttering around the ocean.

Yeah, Well, I will have to think about it. Honestly, I am probably more interested in the building and historical aspect of this hobby than the RC combat side of things anyway I think it is going to be a challenge to build a ship from scratch materials. It is something I have never really done. It is one thing to put together a plastic model ship in a box... something else to build it from wood using plans etc... every part must be made.

We don't run ads. Sounds like you picked up a browser ad-on / malware.

Got a model of the Warspite circa 1915... It is a plastic model in 1/700 scale. I was thinking hey, if I just find servos small enough... nah... just kidding. I was wondering if any of you think I could just use this model as a template for the 1/144th version.... maybe multiply the dimensions by 7?
