My first ship is DKM Bismarck and it has been under construction for the past 6 1/2 ish years (school takes priority). I have decided to fight it under the big gun rule set. It is no were near being ready to to go but I have found more free time to get back on top of it.
Once I truely get going I will be posting a build thread. I will most certainly have questions through the build. Currently I've decided do something crazy. I have decided to "throw out" (not litterally) my original swampworks hull and build a new one from scratch. My biggest challenge for now is getting my ribs cutt out. I simply do not have the tools/talents to cut them out accurately. But this will not stop me from getting this built even if it takes me another six years. Also as far as my research has shown there actually no Big gun clubs around me other then WWCC so it looks like i will just have to go ahead and start my own
Curious what the problem with the original hull was. Don't worry about accurate cutting of ribs - cut outside the lines and file/sand to shape and size. Works great for those of us lacking the patience / skill / etc to actually cut consistently on a line.
hmmm that makes sense and there isn't anything actually wrong with the hull. It is just that after looking into the hobby more over the years I have decided that I want to build it from keel up. It's all about the challenge for me. Oh and then theres the part about me really not enjoying working with the fiberglass hull.
No big gun clubs around except the WWCC? That's the club I was a member of until I enlisted. Great bunch of guys. Where are you at? Is it possible to attend one of their battles? The Maker Faire is coming up soon, and would be well worth the trip, for more than just the boats.
Im in Southern Cali in the Pasadena as well as Pomona area the nearest club to me is SCRAP but they are fast gun (as far as my research shows) and unfortunately i cannot get up there during the school year but my dad and I are planning on going up to the maker faire specifically to see their demonstrations/battles this year.
Ahoy there, Jon! I am also a member of the WWCC. I used to visit my grandparents in Pasadena often, so I know that area. It's quite a drive to get up to Maker Faire, but it's definitely worth it. I'll forward this thread to some other WWCCers who will be there. If you can, bring your ship along (whatever shape it's in) and introduce yourself. At the very least, there'll be a bunch of very knowledgeable people there with example boats that you can look at and compare to.
We have about half our extended family up there so it will double as a visit as well haha as for bringing what i have thus far since ive decided to do away with the fiberglass hull will bring the total up to nada hope to have more to show by then. also will be hard to fit an almost 6ft ship hull in a two seat car haha but i definitely look forward to seeing it all
Im a new member of SCRAP and yes we are a fast gun club. Even if you do go big gun you should still come check out a battle and build session sometime, if you havent already. We battle in Corona at the prado dam close to the 71 & 91 first Saturday of every month. The build sessions are up in Pasadena after the battles.
I would really enjoy that. I havent been to one yet and although I really have my sights set on big gun i think in the long run i want to have multiple ships with the ability to fight both fast gun and big gun styles.
Yeah, when I first started looking into this hobby I was leaning toward big gun, but location and costs factors pushed me towards fast gun and it has been a blast. Either way you go its a great time with great people.
