With the likelihood of distance traveling for NATS events or regional battles, thought I would post this to find the most economical way to get there to battle. Lots of scenarios to consider, but maybe this can be a primer for those wanting to battle in different areas of the country. Discussing "Issues" getting your ship while you fly. 1. Airplane - Small ship (Predred) in checked luggage. Batteries and bottle need to be shipped. Possible that your bag does not make it. What is allowed on the plane? 2. Ground transport (frieght) 3. Friends going, you fly 4. UPS, FedEX
I say 3 or 4. I sent the Moltke up to MN for $50 and another heavy box with batteries and 2 chargers, clothes, and spares for another $50. Then I took just a little bag with gizmos in it on the plane. It was easy and no waiting for any luggage. You can get a 48x12x12 box and add a 12x12x12 to the end of it and ship almost any ship. I used slabs of heavy foam on the sides and saved small bags of peanuts (not loose.. omg) and that kept the ship from shaking up and down in the box. I marked it Fragile and it came back with no damage and only a slight 'moosh' to the box. I didn't take my whole toolbox and I left the bottle and a few other things inside the ship. J
I've had stuff stolen from my checked baggage, and also had "fragile" shipped items arrive at destination crushed down to 1/3 of original , so my choice is: Load car / truck / trailer / whatever and drive to the battle. If logistics or time don't permit this plan, skip that battle.
back and forth from NO La. to NYC , $100 each way. On the way back it must have been end over end for most of the way, really banged up.
Looking at a service like Ship Your Clubs Now | Ship Sticks They ship your hard golf case to a course or other destination for about $39 one way. I think someone said that only golf clubs would be allowed in a case on an airline, anyone know if we can put a ship in and fly with it?
Hey guys, I found this: Golf Travel Bags LLC The Vault Bag - eBags.com .. Let me know what I think. It's for little Savannah. Nicki
Most of the rules now specify that you may only have golf clubs and balls in your golf bags. Stephen did take his SC, but that was years ago, and rules have changed since then. Today, most airlines specify exactly the number of clubs, balls, and shoes you have, and that you can't have anything else. American, for example, says 14 golf clubs, 12 balls, and one pair of shoes. Here's a post from 2013 that rounds up the rules. Airline Rules for Traveling With Golf Clubs | Critical Golf The golf bag isn't going to work for anybody anymore, I'm afraid.
Most of the airlines allow oversized baggage and/or sporting equipment, even according to that golf website that Keri linked to. No reason you shouldn't be allowed to fly with a model boat, no batteries/nitro/co2, it's just weight and cube to them at that point. But really the best advice is probably to check with the airline BEFORE booking the ticket.
The length can be the killer here, as it is in shipping the hulls. You're hitting oversized baggage, and that can come with a hefty fee.
I have a hard case made for keyboards. I have used it a couple times. $100ish each way depending on the airline. Ups is about $60-80 depending on the distance. RoadcaseUSA is the maker. They do all kinds of equipment cases. Get the "airline" latches and they are pretty heavy duty. Heavy...but they don't break. Anyone who's been in a band knows that roadies, are, uh, not subtle with equipment.
