i have an idea to build land artillery batterys out of old RC turrets they would bet built to a standard size and lower portions containg the CO2 container would be boxed and there would be small holes dug to the turrets bottom box size and they would be partialt barried and their rotaion restricted so as not to fire inland to keep people safe from the round the turrets would be able to be fired upon and after being hit a certain amount of time the are to be ruled out of the battle and removed will provid a diagram of the idea soon
But for the effort involved in building two of them, you could build a cruiser as a loaner boat and get someone on the water while they are building!
In what way, though? I'm much more concerned about things that have guns that can chase me than some shore batteries that I can stay away from. Most 1/144 tactics didctate staying AWAY from shore anyhow, as it's easy to get pinned against the shore and pounded by other ships. Some time ago we had hypothesized about building a floating island with a Navarone gun, with several targets that could be shot at by ships that would result in the shutdown of the gun. That is still a stationary target, but putting it out further from shore at least lets it be more involved in the action, and allows the ships a chance to retaliate.
You really wouldn't have to build an island for this. It could be a free floating "hull" with an anchor. The only problem I can potentially see is that if it is too solid BB's will ricochet off at odd angles. Still if it is far enough out they should not be too much of a risk.
well i am actuly concidering islands on the pond im build since i am soleing building it for RC combat
zbond007, many of the Big Gun clubs have done almost exactly what you're saying. They're called "shore batteries", and are basically floating boxes with a single rotating turret inside. Sometimes they're built into an island, and have a target to shut them down, other times the box itself is penetrable and the shore battery is sinkable. Sinkable or not, these shore batteries have a floating dock nearby with a number of targets, that can be shot off for points or as part of a campaign game. Overall, these shore batteries don't appear very often because they aren't fun to use. Club safety and insurance requires that all participants (ships, transports, AND shore batteries) have NAMBA insurance, so we can't simply ask passerby to help out. As a result, only active club members can operate the shore battery, and they usually prefer to drive a mobile warship than limit themselves to an anchored gun turret.
Not necessarily. NAMBA has provisions for buying single-event insurance, specifically for situations like this. There's just not a lot of shore batteries out there, because most builders are more interested in building ships than in building floating guns.
for me, the strength of the hobby is that you put your ship up to be shot and they do tool. A shore battery risks NOTHING! Kind of like trying to win the lottery by being given tickets.
i thing you could take a box spray paint it gray install a bunch of turents and then it would be like a bunker with artillery batterys
You can see a shore battery facing off against Kotori's dreadnought Prinz Eugen here. The shore battery is the box in the lower left corner, with several stakes to prevent it from moving anywhere. Next to it is a dock with a number of targets that the battleship is trying to knock off. If you look closely at the shore battery, you can see the one side that has penetrable balsa on it. This balsa is thicker than even battleship armor, which is why Kotori only worked on the targets instead of the actual gun. Here is a view of some shore batteries in the 2005 Campaign Game. They defended a landing beach from an LST that would deliver a tank to the shore. The one on the right can be sunk, the one on the right can be turned off by hitting a 2" target. Both are penetrable like any other warship, so we can tell when they are damaged. There is also a dock with targets on it. Shore defense gun batteries have been done before. They're still being done: there was one built just this year. Why aren't there more of them? Judging by the number of battleships vs shore guns, battleships are much cooler. Shore batteries add some spice, but battleships are the meat and potatoes of model warship combat.
I have always thought this is a bad idea because the game is that you put up your boat to be shot and I put up my boat to be shot. A shore battery puts up nothing so is like a illegal alien who gets free hospitalization, etc. at the cost of us all.
Not quite. Shore batteries still have to be penetrable and sinkable like everything else, so they're exposed to the same risks as every ship on the water. They are very boring, however, and I would much prefer if every person who built one would put forth that little extra effort to build a ship around their guns, rather than a silly-looking little box.
