Since the good ole US Navy imposed a one year building holiday on me in the form of a CSG deployment I've been itching to get back into the shop. In all likelihood I will be relocating myself and my shop to the Norfolk VA area once we return (sometime during the summer) currently on the ways are two Lexington class battlecruisers. The 1/144th one if done, minus weapons. Given how long she has been sitting unused I am likely going to have to strip her down and refit her before I fight her. The 1/96th Saratoga is pretty much at the same place you see in the build thread below. The fiberglass/foam experiment didn't work out great so I stripped that out and now have the lower hull only glasses. I'm going to try a sheeting THEN glass for the same reasons I discussed in the thread to get me back on track. So, Norfolk VA. Any 1/144th shooters around? Since I still need to order guns, (I had been holding out for Big Gun weapons to be available by now) and resheet I can likely conform to any ruleset. (Sara will come out and play too once I get her built up. New game. GODZILLA!) https://rcwarshipcombat.com/threads/saratoga-build-1-96th.443705/
There are the MAG guys in Maryland (IRCWCC). Somewhere in Virginia there is a Big Gun group, but I haven't talked with them in quite a while so I'm not sure where they are or their status. With any luck, one or more of them are on the forums and will see your post EDIT: Go to Kings Bay or Mayport! Lots of us down south!
Hi Ace_Austin, I am Mark Bunting. I consider myself a member of the MABG, a Big Guns club, and have been active on and off since 1999. I have possession of another member's two battleships (Musashi and a Richelieu) plus I have a convoy ship ready to go. I previously ran HMS Hood and some other ships I built. I am currently building USS Indiana and some other projects. I'm back "on" and wondering if you are interested in Big Guns? Cheers, Mark
Mark, The Lexington I built was built using the BG ruleset. The part that held me up was getting the guns. I "may" depending on how things work out do a brand new Lexington hull using the "in between" ribs I built up to build the Sara and leave the hull I've got now for puttering around the pond. I was always fonder of the slower speed and fire rates as that seemed more in keeping with the way the fighting was. Ian
Very cool, Ian. I think the Lexington class was beautiful- it's the first set of plans I bought 17 years ago. I can kinda help you with guns - I happen to have two dual 1/4" x 3" Indiana cannon turrets on hand. When are you due to arrive in Norfolk?
The exact date of our return is on the DL. But since we left in NOV and CVN deployments are in the 6-8 month ballpark I expect to be around come mid summer. It would likely be another month or two before I had the chance to go down to my house in FL and aquire all of my boat stuff. On the bright side, I've already got the girlfriend siked to go paintballing with me and as soon as I showed her the WWI boats out of AH Empire she wants to get all into that was well. I think I have her sold on a Radetzky. So we might have two boats to get out there with.
Hi Austin, Mark, Gascan and I are long-time Big Gunners from California. We are currently based in Georgia and have quite a fleet together. Two dreadnoughts, one pre-dreadnought, one fast battleship, two destroyers, and a submarine. Most of these haven't seen action in years, and desperately need an overhaul. Still, an overhaul would be worth it to get the big gun ships back in the action.
