Hiya! Grab the popcorn! Take a seat, sit back and relax. Its time for the Hero Head Cam to go to work! I'll use this thread to post videos taken during the 2011 IRCWCC Nats. Now the quality isn't the best. After all, it is only a head mounted, standard definition camera. Yet it offers a somewhat unique view from the eyes (head?) of a battling captain. The audio quality is not very good due to the camera being enclosed in a watertight casing. Enjoy! It surprised most of us the first time we watched the video at how steady the picture was for a head mounted camera. Heh. If one watches carefully, they will see the picture shake at times. That is when the Erin was firing it's cannons. Tuesday AM Sortie 2 is being a pain ... for some reason, the GoPro saved it in an odd avi format that doesn't play on anything other than Quicktime ... which means that Movie Maker doesn't like to open it. Going to try a few things to see if I can't fix that. In the meantime, the Thursday AM Sortie 1 video is processing and will upload within the next hour or two.
Uugh, I think I'm getting motion sick. Maybe we should mount your head on a tripod. Just kidding, the videos are cool. Ron Hunt
I really like these videos. I forget which sortie didn't get recorded on the Nagato cam though. I finally remembered to grab some Rain-X wipes last week so maybe the camera on the boat will give better pictures in the future. Friday Nagato cam won't show much, I was having trouble with my magazines ( made them out of the wrong type of plastic trying to get done in time ) and stayed out of the battle for the most part. There is a short segment where the Allied Admiral sinks on camera in sortie 2 but unfortunately it is pretty blurry from all the water on the lens cover. Ron Hunt
Great Videos guys. Maybe next Nats a couple of these cameras could be mounted below the surface off the bottom to catch the bbs zinging through the water and fim the models sinking and being retrieved.
I'm not sure you would be able to see much underwater except mud kicked up by the combatants and props. Mounting them on a boom on the bow like you do, Stokamoto, seems to give the best vantage point for a single camera. Rich Spencer, who owns the two cameras he graciously let us borrow, plans to mount them back to back on the smokestack of his Tirpitz to get both a front and rear view. Ron Hunt
We mounted one on the Erin's searchlight platform a while back and got a great viewpoint video looking aft over the stern gun turrets. The position of the camera and the scale of the turrets in the video made it look like you were actually standing on the platform. Great viewpoint that I hope to do again someday. In fact, I'll see if that short clip is on the laptop someplace and get it posted up.
Added another video, the Thursday PM Battle, Sortie 1. The video has some of the best close in combat footage of the entire week.
Your right Ron on that. I forget that up here in the North the waters are fairly clear in the summer.
I posted some video from the Go Pro on board the MO at different angles so far but nothing from the elevated tripod yet. I thought about making another tripod for the stern and get the kind of view from the stern perspective. Another idea is to use one of the turrets as a rotate platform for the camera and control the camera's rotation from the barbette but gettig the speed right to catch those shots may be difficult. However I like the idea of 4 cams covering all quadrants to cover the action. A Go Pro Hd version would work really nice.
Internet at the house died yesterday evening, so the time was put to good use editing videos. If internet is back up when I get home after work, I'll be uploading around 5 more videos. Including the video where a Bismarck gets stuck next to shore. Everyone knows what happens next ... or do you?
I love the videos. Great work Mike. I like the Nagato cam videos the best. Although you might have been able to pick a more approachable platform. Something not bristling with cannons in every direction.. Mikey
Mikey, Do you went to Explain (Including the video where a Bismarck gets stuck next to shore. Everyone knows what happens next ... or do you?) I'm just sorry i couldn't make it down for IRC nats!!! Nikki
