Yes, you can put a laser pointer on your cannons. But ... Most formats do not allow devices that help with tracking. Also, it is very hard to see a laser in bright daylight, much less trying to find the dot on two maneuvering ships.
but its not Automatic-tracking and automatic-ranging you still have to manually move your ship to get the shot .yes it would be hard to see but its not Automatic. lol a night laser battel would be cool tho
That falls under individual clubs' rules for weaponry, etc. My club, the WWCC, currently has laser pointers for aiming listed under "experimental weapons", meaning someone can install one for a few battles to try it, then the club votes whether or not to keep it. Frankly, I don't see it doing much benefit, except in very rare cases. You'd have to be fighting an opponent right up against shore, and standing right next to your ship, in order to benefit. Otherwise, you'd never be able to see the dot. And further complicating the matter, we're firing round shot from smoothbore cannon. At anything other than point-blank range, even if the dot is on target, you're still basically farting in the general direction of the other guy.
hmm interesting concept but you can take it a step beyond. how bout installing a laser pointer into the same barrels you fire out of ... that would give you the spacing you need to sink them axis ships, it is possible as i already figured a way out but didnt put it to work yet. rules say no tracking or range finding devices .. a laserpointer would be neither but an indicating device .. it tells you where your bb's are suposed to smash through the axis hulls. i agree that the accuracy may not be as great as expected but with my .005 play ss barrels i'm never far of, if only i could get someone the put rifling in my barrels .. but i'm working on that. My barrels are rifled, they have quite amazing accuracy, I was suprised at how straight they fire round balls. The lazer pointer in MWC has been tried before during a night battle. I was talking to Don C, and he said that Herr Fluguel with his Bismarck tried one during Nats, out in Missouri early 90's. Everyone thought it was cool how it was pointing straight ahead off his bow gun. But then Herr Fluguel became fixated on looking at the dot, and not where he was going. He ran head on into the island that had a wall around it, and knocked off the forward turret, so that the lazer pointer was pointed straight up, after he repaired his ship, that was the end of the lazer trials Don said.
see i would mount the pointer in the barrels of iowa that fire off the bow, left or right sidemounts , both will be triplles soon anyway krijn
I could see a laser range finder being used in Battlestations, where that is likely possible, due to the rules. It would be neat tho
Just remember, history tells us that any advancement in gunnery WILL be used against you, and soon becomes not so "neat".
On a sunny day at seven feet moving reflection off the water it most likely won't work but it'd still be cool for a night battle or practice. How about something like a curb finder on a car? you know use like a piece of fiber optic cable or something like a broom brissle I don't know, but when it touches the other boat it bends easy it won't move it won't distract it in anyway but you know when it touches it thats when you shoot. I don't know just screwing around on the topic now
I remember seeing something at Clippard, I think it was called a whisker valve... It's a pneumatic valve like the SMAV-3, but it is triggered by bumping a 12-inch (or shorter) stick, or "whisker". Someone drew up plans to use such a device as a firing mechanism for torpedo-boats. The idea was, the cannon could not fire unless the whisker valve was activated, so you would go charging in with the trigger held down, and once you touched the other guy, BANG he's hit. The inventor passed on installing it, though, mentioning dire predictions of arguments and fragmenting the club...
Hello, I have Lasers on two of my ships and also on an Island gun turret. My USS Shaw has one on the stern rotating gun mounted below the barrel and my Tashkent has one mounted in the forward rotating/elevating turret. The Shaw had a second laser forward but after having it shot off the second time I didn't have any more small diameter lasers to replace it. The Island has a pellet rifle laser mounted between the 1/4" barrels and turns on when the turret rotates. The larger size of 1/72 scale helps as you have more room but a laser could be mounted in the superstructure. Also some glasses have lenses that you can help you see a laser better in the daytime. Islands have used whisker type switches on fixed guns to keep attackers from pulling up next to the island and shooting targets. RiverRaider
Very cool. How much of a difference do you think the laser pointers make on the 1/72 Shaw and Tashkent?
Hello, The laser on the Tashkent is not as effective as I would have liked (to high up off of the water). I will be moving it to the stern. The stern mount has worked well on the Shaw. The stern mounting lowers the laser which for me made it easier to see hull sides or island targets. If you can flash your spot light to make out a target then run in firing forward guns and turn away and use the laser to keep the stern gun on target as you evade the return fire. You may get 2 or 3 more good hits on that type of attack, but an Island gun it can be awesome the Island gunner lines you up and can track you until your out of range. Lasers are more of a fun addition to a ship rather than being the ultimate weapon. RiverRaider
Guys, Just Don't point it at someones Nuts! Ive got the biggest gutter brain, something1 That's what happens growing up with four brothers... Nikki
