I have seen numerous posts about how to fiberglass and make a plug, but nothing about how to make the actual mold for the hull? Is the mold made out of fiberglass as well? I have made molds out of urethane rubber, and have done some plaster casting in the past. But the parts I was producing were only a few inches high. This will be my first large mold. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
The mold is fiberglass also and has wooden stiffeners along the center of the hull which join the 2 piece mold together. Bob Pottle had a how to on the NABS site a couple of years ago but I don't know where it is now.
the old site was taken down I believe as it was not in use anymore. I would contact Bob Pottle and he can put you on the right track for sure.
I did find some site that show "how to" for large sized rubber type molds. The nice thing about them is that they are flexable, thus would not need to be two part. I am still doing some research.
If I remember correctly at least 3 people had CD copies of the old NABS website material, including my how-to articles on mold and hull making. I think Stokomoto has a copy and Rob Clarke and Paul McKinnon may still have them. Paul is a likely source as he's been planning to revive the NABS website. If not contact Stokomoto. It shouldn't be difficult to post the articles on R/C naval Combat. Many years ago permission was given to S.C.R.A.P. club in southern California permission to publish and/or post the articles so check their website. I don't have time to re-write the articles at present. Bob
Thanks Bob, Will do. I even had the cRaZy thought of detailing the hull for the mold so that rib line and portholes would be molded into the hull. This would be so that a ship to be built for either display or combat.
