When you build your ship does the name have to be of an actual ship of that class or can you come up with your own name as long as it doesn't sound stupid?
I am building a Mississippi PDN...I am naming it Kilkis. You should do fine if you stick with one of the members of the class ship it was. Pennsylvania/Arizona. Texas/New York Iowa/Missouri/Wisconsin/New Jersey etc. Of course for convoy ships I think there is a lot of lattitude.
As an example, when Brian Koehler and I built the twin Vanguards (there being only one real one), I named mine HMS Enterprize, thus securing permission to build it from Trek-fan wife
What might be some good non-historical ship names? Maybe stick with those that are at least close to convention, or sound similar. Here are some of my nominations: HMS Incorrigible HMS Restitute USS Confusion (BBs used to be named for states) USS Flounder (SSs used to be named for fish) DKM Scheißelastkahn FNS Nous Rendons JM
Since there were literally thousands of liberties built, they actually started to name them after peoople and places. My own liberty is the James B Beam, and my brother's is the Henry Ford. Neither name was actually applied to a real ship, but they seem to fit in with the way liberties were named. My new ship will be the HMS Thunderer, a WWII Lion class BB. The Lion was laid, but not completed, and four names were allocated for the classL: Lion, Temeraire, Conqueror and Thunderer. Since the current Conqueror is a submarine and the other two names are in use in the Ausbg, I settled for Thunderer. My brothers new bb will be the Jon-luc, a name familiar to all Trek fans...
Wasn't the very first Liberty Ship the SS Patrick Henry? Named for a person, & I believe his "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech was what inspired the name "Liberty Ships" for the entire class (which was technically "Ocean class", IIRC). Jack Daniels, Johnny Walker (there actually was a Capt. John Walker in the RN, leading a force charged with hunting U-boats in the Atlantic, & very effective at it), Sam Walton, Donald Trump, Ross Perot, etc. Henry Kaiser would be doubly appropriate. Plenty of examples of planned ship names that never actually got built. Nowadays, they seem to get named a lot for politicians. Maybe some current examples would generate enough "enthusiasm" to make people want to shoot them up all the more! JM
A few names I think are amusing for transports: SS Willie Maykett SS Yahee Maydett (Willie's more successful cousin) SS Flounder SS Bottom Dweller SS Scuttlefish SS Halibut HMS Inedible HMS Indigestible HMS Incomprehensible HMS Unintelligible HMS Unpalatable HMS Unbelievable HMS Inconceivable HMS Indescribable Fugu Maru (only for armed transports: fugu is pufferfish, a potentially poisonous delicacy in japan) Omaru (Japanese for a kiddie training toilet, may also be "King Transport") Yopparatteiru Maru (Japanese for "Drunken Transport") Baka Maru (Japanese for "Idiot Transport") Okita Maru (first captain of the Space Battleship Yamato ) Hoodoo Maru (armed transport based on Mehoshi Maru built in 1984) #### Maru (an inappropriate Japanese word for fecal matter, don't tell Sensei I learned this)
From what I understand, it depends on the club you are with. For some clubs it must be the name of an actual ship.
Sounds like a sub name, but not sure. You could check in DANFS. Of course I would be duty bound to destroy it, professional concerns you see.
By the way: The USS Silverside was the most decorated US sub of WW2. Her skipper was from Chicago. The USS Silverside was on display at Navy Pier in Chicago for many years. Today she is on display in Michigan.
By the way, there were two Iowa's that were laid down but never completed! BB65 USS Illinois and BB66 USS Kentucky. In fact the bow of the Kentucky was installed onto the USS Wisconsin after she had that accident! Should I get around to building an Iowa, it will be BB65 the USS Illinois.
