Hi All, Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jeremy and I live in the Lansing MI area. I am very interested in getting involved and started in this hobby. I have been doing lots of research online to learn more about everything involved. I plan on attending a couple of battles before I get started. I don’t know if I want to go with Big Gun or Fast Gun. I thought I would start with a Liberty Ship to get the hang of it. Then I wanted to build a Light Cruiser being that is seams like everyone is building a battleship so why not do something different. However looking at the Fast Gun, if your not a battleship it’s not worth getting into. The way they have their “warship class” it’s not advantageous to be any other ship. (for ex. Light Cruiser (class 3) can only have 2 guns(barrels)and one pump) Battleships have class 4-8 depending on weight. Maybe I am not understanding something with the Fast Gun stuff. Therefore I am thinking of getting into the Big Gun. Thanks for any help or tips.
For "fast gun" light cruiser are quite nice. They have speed, and a good bit of fire power. A light cruiser is tacticaly a "raiding" type ship. You shoot and run. Building a freigher is not required. You can go straight to a warship with no problems. The battleing pond used by "small gun" group is in East Lansing. So you would be right next door. Plus there are several experenced builders in the area, that can help you out with any issues. Which light cruiser are you considering? Some of them are quite small, only a bit bigger than a DD, others as large as a heavy cruiser. In this photo you can see 4 class 4 battlecrusers, and a class 3 light cruiser. http://www.glas-info.net/october_picture_q_full.jpg
Welcome! As specialist said, a cruiser is actually a decent ship to begin with because in the MWC (which is the fast gun group up there) you'll have speed to get away from the battleships. I also agree, unless you're going big gun, there's not much good reason to start with a transport, because convoy missions aren't run regularly. So, it's probably better to start with a warship of some variety so you can jump in and start playing.
Solid choice. As it just so happens, Battler's Connection makes a fiberglass hull for them. A Cleveland is one of the best choices you could make.
That's good to hear. I guess some of my research is paying off. Now was I correct that I could only have two working barrels and one pump if I so chose. Or would there be other suggestions for outfitting the Cleveland.
This page might be helpfull for some photos of the "guts" of a "small gun" cruiser. It is a Salt Lake City- about the same size and weight as a Cleveland. http://www.scrapcombatships.com/commodore/warships/slcau.html
Yes, that's correct. 2 guns, one pump. Dual sterns are superior to one bow and one stern gun, and it's easier to set up as well.
You know GLAS meets in East Lansing every few weeks? I envy you, you have a battle group IN YOUR HOME TOWN! Contact Mark Roe: http://www.rcnavalcombat.com/rcnavalcombat/forum/pop_mail.asp?id=29 He will get you started.
