Hey all, I am new here and was wondering if there was anyone active in Illinois that might be willing to help a newbie get into the hobby? I have been wanting to this hobby for a few years, but between military service and college, I haven't really had the time until now. I am looking for someone to kind of guide me in building my first ship or giving me advice on whether or not there are active events close to my area. I have plenty of experience in modeling ships and am not too worried about actually building the ship, I just want to make sure there are events relatively close by so that I am not spending a bunch of money and having the wife yell at me for not doing anything with the model haha. If anyone could help out, that would be much appreciated. I really look forward to moving ahead in this hobby and would love to be a part of it.
Travel is usually the norm as we are so scattered throughout the country. There's a group in Michigan, and another in Ohio.
We have a battle/ build in Saranac MI pond on May 14 I wounder if the Quad City and Champaign Illinos guys could ride together from Chicago? We are the G.L.A.S. group if you want to see our schedule
I love boats but what makes this fun for me is the guns. as u can imagine there are some variations to our boats: simple superstructure internal armor water-proofing bilge pumps etc. We would love to help Have you thought of a boat you would like to build
I haven't really thought of anything I want to build yet. I figured travel would be required for this as there doesn't seem to be a whole of people active in my area, but I have been looking over forums for a while now and glad to see there are people active to participate with. Do any of you guys have suggestions on what to build? I am pretty good at building models and working with RC as I have done RC planes for a while. Cost isn't that big of an issue for me. Are there sites that sell whole kits or would I have to piece one together?
And I would love to come to the build in Michigan, however the wife and I are in the process of closing on a house and I am finishing my last semester at college, so I can't make it out of state until roughly the middle of June. And Will, I was in the Marines stationed in Hawaii.
Strikemodels.com Battlersconnection.com they sell ship Kits from 20% to 80% of what you would need. Cruisers or Battlecruisers are good starting boats.
The guys in MN are having a battle Memorial Day weekend. Nationals s in late June n Penn. MN will host more battles in July August and September. If you want to get added to email list with guys from MN WI IA MO IL IN MI NE ND SD on it let me know. I have contact emails for the other guys in IL. Steve in IN is probably the closest one to you. Or maybe Lars in Cedar Rapids.
It does sound like u are busy. I know this will start an on-line-debate but here I go, it usually takes from 4/6/12 months to build a boat. I know u have experience building, which is good, I would love to see u battle in 2016 so we will offer any help we can. There is a lot of info on-line, and u can call any of us for help THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! kas
You're in the same.........boat........as me. I had to figure out how far I would need to travel to be able to get use out of my purchase. Strike suggests starting with a Brooklyn/Northampton/Lutzow for a beginner. I know with no experience under our belts we'll have our hands full in tactics with just one or two guns. I definitely plan to build the big ships too when the time is right. Just gotta decide on a ship and how you equip it. I went with a Lutzow "e-fire" kit since I know how nice a solenoid firing system works.
