Hello all, I'm a mid-30's engineer who just found out that the really cool idea that I had as a teenager (R/C warship combat) is actually a thing. I've got some rudimentary fabrication skills; I built a kit R/C plane about 20 years ago and another as a group project about 15 years ago. I'm thinking about building a SoDak and will post over in the appropriate forum about that.
Welcome! You're in a really good area to get started, right cap smack in the middle of MAG. @warspiteIRC should be really close to you. I reccomend you contact him to get help getting started.
Welcome. As Beaver states, your in the middle of MAG (Maryland Attack Group) territory. Marty "The Legend" Hayes is in Cape St. Claire and has his shop open most Friday nights. There are four or five active builders that meet there. I'm over in Rockville with my own shop and get over to Marty's every now and then. Say hello on the IRCWCC Yahoo group were most of the MAG guys are more active. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/IRCWCC/info
Welcome Aboard! if you get over this way(Michigan) you can stop in and say hello to Will^^^^ and I! looking forward to seeing you on the water. Craig
Thanks all for the welcome. I've requested access to the Yahoo group mentioned by Steve - probably the best thing for me would be to see a little bit of the actual build process to have an appreciation for what I'm getting into before I set any expectations for myself.
Take a look at the portpolarbear.com site. Lots of building articles and opinions on what to pick for your first ship.
After doing a bunch of reading, I'm leaning towards starting with something smaller like the Baltimore. I see that Jenkse is selling a hull kit for $75 which seems like it'll bypass a lot of headaches for a first time out. I also found some guys that meet most Fridays about 20 minutes from my house, so that's great for me.
