i was wondering first off about how much does it cost to get in to fast gun. i live in north carolina. i am transfering over from rc planes pretty much so i have pretty good building skills.
depends on the ship. An average class 4 battlecruiser is probably in the $800.00 range, counting the radio. A big battleship such as the Iowa or Yamato is probably well over 1k. The more stuff you can fabricate on your own (such as cannons), the lower the over all cost will be. Mike D
Plans and radio depend on the ship. For most ships, a 4 channel radio is sufficient, but some guys want more bells and whistles. As for radio, any ground frequency (or 2.4ghz) radio are fine, as are the ham band radios (requires a license...not worth it for just RC action IMO). Right now, the 2.4 ghz radios such as the DX6 look like the best bet as they avoid frequency conflicts. I'm just waiting for someone to get one of the Futaba 2.4 ghz radios to try out before I buy one. I always like to let the techie types guinea pig for me. As for plans, there are several sources. If you purchase a hull from Battler's Connection, I believe they have plans for all the ships they sell. There are some other plan sources linked on the main site here (I think) if you wish to scratch build your hull. Mike D
what ship are you looking at? scratch build or premade hull? 2.4 ghz radios are the ticket can be used both on surface and air
I have a futuba 2.4 GHz, but have not tested it yet. Will let you know. And another recommendation for Battlers Connection. It really is one stop shopping.
I can say that I have suffered interference on 2.4 with a dx6. (too many folks with web enabled phones and routers near where I was trying to battle I think)
All the more reason to go with the Futaba I guess. From what I understand, it hops many more times per second and to more frequencies then the DX6 does. Mike D
The Futaba 2.4 I have been using has preformed without problems. It has worked in thunderstorms, near office buildings, and with about 40 other radios of various types. Several were used at MWC nats with no problems. The Spektrum radio is suspected of being perticular about it's power supply. It seams to not like voltage spikes from motors and such. Capicators on the power supply seam to fix some of it problems. BTW the spektrum dx6 is DSS type, and does not frequency hop.
Ah, thanks for the clarification. I thought someone had mentioned that the DX6 hops between like 6 channels or something like that. Perhaps I misunderstood what I read; I've done very little research on them as I had heard from some people they were power hogs. Of course, others said they will last all week. I'm a Futaba fan, so I was looking for a review...now that someone has actually said they have used one and it works well, I'll have to pick one up. Mike D
I would really like a british ship but it does not matter to me. i still do not know where to get them please add links. Does any body no of any clubs in north carolina that i can contact. Thanks
I believe the Southeast Attack Squadron is in that general area. They are an MWC affiliated club. I don't have their contact info, but I met a few of those guys at some IRCWCC events, and they are great guys. I think they have a club section on these forums, where you might be able to establish contact with them. As for choosing British, I think you can't go wrong there! I'd recommend an Indefatigable class battlecruiser. They are four units, have two side by side rudders, and 26 seconds. They have a respectable blend of speed, maneuverability and firepower. They are very comparable in performance with my own HMS Invincible (which I am very happy with) but they have some extra room inside and some extra weight to play with which I think gives them an edge; especially for someone building their first ship. Ralph Coles has a VERY nice hull available, but he is not producing them at the moment as I believe he is still out of country (could be wrong there). Its possible that someone has one laying around they would be willing to sell though. She'll be a tough little ship for you to cut your teeth on. Mike D
As I mentioned in your other thread, I dont think anyone makes Invincibles at the moment. In the Washington Treaty section though, there is a thread titled "Fiberglass hulls for sale" or something like that. As of a month ago or so, one of the guys had 2 Indefatigable hulls for sale with basic plans. The Indefatigables (Indefatigable, Australia, and New Zealand) were basically stretched Invincibles so they would be fairly close in appearance to an Invincible. The thread is a little over a month old now, but it might be worth your time to ask him if he still has the hulls if an Indefatigable would be an acceptable alternative to an Invincible. Mike D
