Hey guys. I'm brand new to this game so I'm trying to find a strong ship to start with as well as a group around me. I look forward to getting a ship and getting her battle ready. I'm looking towards a SoDak or treaty BB class as an intro for the room and easy ship to get used to.

Welcome. I am still technically a new guy here myself, seems most guys will recommend a cruiser for a first ship. I have one on the way to me that I just traded for. Supposed to be here Monday. I am super excited and cant wait for it to get here so I can start working on it. I will be doing some work on the inside to attempt to improve it's damage control, as well as adding some detail to the super structure. It's fine how it is as far as detail for most guys, but I like to detail my stuff out a little more.
As far as others around you, I can't say for sure, but there is a map of captains/clubs on here you can look at to get an idea where some people are. Most guys have told me that in this hobby you need to be willing to travel, lol.

You're from Albuquerque?! How cool! My submarine was the USS Albuquerque SSN-706 :) The city sent us food several times, we loved you guys :)

The battlers nearest you are fast gun, probably TX although there are some in Nevada, as well. Yeah, I know it doesn't sound 'close' but we generally drive a ways for battle weekends :)

SoDak is a good solid ship. Most guys start smaller, but if you like the ship, then go with it. You could do a lot worse :)

    And welcome!

    Welcome!

You might actually be marginally closer to the folk in southern california, SCRAP and their nevada contingent than to those in TX. @ship crazy and @jadfer may know more specifically.

Dallas is several hours closer to Albuquerque than LA.

Dallas is within 10 or 11 hours but a long trip for a build session or local battle. Not a bad drive for a large regional IF they have one there.

LA is about 880 miles out so add about 4 hours.

Closest would be Brandon in Nevada.. but still a good drive away.

So you are about 8 hours from Dirty Dave in Abilene, and 9 hours from Jeff in Aubrey, not sure where the other guys are located specifically.

Ted should be scheduling some battles in Houston this year at some point. We could arrange a get together in Dallas and have a weekend build session if you want to meet in the near future. The next scheduled event we will be going to is the Brouhaha in Boutte, LA. The guys from Mineapolis MN will be driving down (17hrs) and it is an hour shorter for you to drive to Boutte (16hr).

    My suggestion is:

    1. Get a smaller boat to start with: If you want Allied then I suggest an I-boat. The I-boat is a great boat and it will fit in shipping containers easily.
    2. Build to the IRC/Fast gun format - as far as I know its the largest organization we have in the hobby, there are lots of battles to attend, although mostly east of you, AND all the fast gun in Texas is IRC at this time.
    3. Ship the boat to the events you want to attend and then fly. The local groups will have all the major tools you need, just bring out a few basic things like bb loader, ball wrenches, screw driver, etc. and maybe a few spares. I shipped my boat and another box with chargers and even clothes to save on airline baggage fees when I went to MN for a regional.
Traveling by plane opens up the entire US... I highly recommend Ming's Moat and the Brouhaha as the best fun I have had in the hobby. Another favorite of mine is Springfield MO but we don't battle there anymore.
    4. Have fun!!

My first few years I traveled all over.. from Houston to Springfield MO, Farmington MO, Bouttee LA, Nats in Minneapolis MN, Nats in North Carolina, ..I am not sure where else anymore.

    See ya
