In Big Guns, generally a battleship or battlecruiser is the best starting ship because the large displacement and volume available make for an easier build. Cruisers and smaller tend to mean more design and capability compromises that you don't have experience making. In Fast Guns, the number of cannon just keeps increasing with the size of the ship, meaning they get progressively more complex to build and fight. Therefore, Fast Guns newbies often start with cruisers. Destroyers are fun, but are difficult to build and fight effectively at 1:144 scale.

Is anyone selling BigGun cannon atm or is it all just resale of old ones and some limited home construction?

No commercial seller at this time. But with 3D printing a few have come up with battle tested designs that they are willing to share the files or if you inquire with them and time permitting they may assemble guns for you.
