Yes, I know you are thinking that I don't know that there are pond locations in the 'locations' tab, but those are just battle ponds, what I am talking about are sailing ponds. This is a thread for people to post location of sailing ponds that they know about. This thread is for people moving to different parts of the country, and want to know where they could sail their ship. Also, this is for people to post the best sailing spots in the area, so other battlers living in the area who didn't know about that pond could sail there. And if you can, please post pictures. AND REMEMBER, CHECK THAT IT IS ALLOWED TO SAIL ON THAT LAKE. These are some of the ponds and waterways in the Richmond area that MIGHT be sailable: The lake in Joe Bryan Park- Looks like a nice place to cruise around. Lake Rooty- An R/C Sailboat group sails there alot. Swan and Sheilds Lakes-Heard good things about it but I'm not completely sure it's legal to sail on. It would take a crusade against the City of Richmond to hold a battle there, but it could be possible. The James River- The mighty James is calm and tranquil in some parts around Richmond, but there are many rough spots, since we sit on the fall line. Pony Pastures sounds appealing, but DON'T sail there. Hollywood Rapids is pretty self explanatory. At the calm spots, throw a nice sized branch in the river and see how fast it floats along. That is how you decide if you want to put your boat in. More on the Swan and Sheilds Lakes- which are located between Maymont(which is a place you need to go to if you are ever in Richmond), and Byrd Park. The lake is split in half. One half has a tiny waterfall so it really isn't a good sailing/battling place. The other half looks ideal, with no activity other than a lot of birds like geese and mallards. Other than that, it's probably the best place in Richmond to sail, if it is legal.
Rivers (or even creeks) aren't a good venue, as it is very easy to lose a (fairly to very expensive) boat permanently if it can be washed downstream once sunk. Preferred venues are low-traffic ponds to small lakes, ideally not more than 6' deep or so to facilitate finding & recovering boats.
That is true. Lake Rooty and The lake in Joe Bryan Park will probably remain in the just good for sailing group. I don't know if Lake Sheilds would be both a good sailing and battle site though.
