I was wondering if with a ship that has a bow that curves up, are you allowed to build the bow flat so that the cannons can shoot forwards?
The ship that I'm building is a Suffren class cruiser in case you wanted to know. :)
    Thanks

Nope, you have to build the ship as built. Modifications to the ship in order to make the guns more effective are a big no no.

The suffren really didn't have much of an upward curve on the deck, you probably could flatten it out slightly and I really doubt anybody would care. The thing is, you don't want the cannons pointed forwards anyways, to put it simply, it is just easier to get away safely with stern cannons if somebody starts chasing you.

Got one on the bench at home with the subdeck going in... You could mount the gun(s) 15 degrees to port or stbd and clear the bow while still remaining legal.

I am one of the wierd guys who loves bow guns on my boats, but I will tell you, this is not a ship that you want bow guns on. Go with dual sterns.

Ok, got another question. On the Suffren plans that I have, it shows that she only has twenty ribs. Evenly spacing them puts them 2.70in apart . What size plywood would I have to use, and would I have to add anymore ribs?

If you're using 1/4" ply for the ribs you should be fine.

Thanks a lot! I guess I'll go with dual sterns on my ship.
I've got one more question (I hope I'm not boring you guys with all these questions:confused:) does the 1/4 in plywood need to be exactly 1/4 in? The wood that I have is a little too thin.
Thanks so much guys, I don't know what I would do without this site!

As long as it's really close. If you're using the metric stuff that's like 1mm thinner, it's fine.

start a build thread with pictures to show us your progress. It will also help to see potential areas were you could encounter problems during the build. plus everyone loves pictures. I believe one of the favorite sayings is "pics or it didnt happen" haha

That's me! ask me how many pics I don't have of my MN Foch loaner boat build... It'll be cool to see a wood Suffren coming together as I finish up Foch, which will be totally Fochin' awesome.
