the mbg always insisted on turret covers being in place, and it looked good.I noticed from a lot of the pictures from all the big gun clubs that turret covers are no longer in vogue. to bad because i think it made for a good sight and more scale
MWC is a turrets-on club, but we don't beat the newbies too badly about it. But running naked is frowned upon.
Most battleships in the WWCC have turret covers. Unfortunately, due to poor design, many interfere with turret rotation and are taken off for combat, or are shot or otherwise knocked off during battle. The end result is quite a few ships are flashing the crowd and showing off their big guns (its all about the big guns, isn't it?) by the end of the battle.
Don't you hate it when folks don't put turret covers on? I for one will never do that. It looks so darned ugly that I would rather sink than sail without a turret cover. There are a few other things people do with their turrets that bugs me as well: 1) non-scale height or length. It always bugs me when a ship who's turrets historically could scrape the deck has its guns located several inches up. I also don't like it when ships like destroyers or cruisers have gun barrels that are way too long, because it looks so WEIRD! I mean come on, cruisers aren't supposed to have 6-inch-long barrels. 2) non-uniform barrels. Every now and then I see a battleship whose turrets have three wonderfully scale barrels poking out, at the wonderfully scale elevation of 35 degrees up (or so), and the REAL gun poking out underneath with 10-15 degrees down angle. I wonder how long it will be until they figure out that ships look better when all three barrels are the same length, made of the same material, and are set at the same elevation, regardless of which ones are armed or not.
Being unfamiliar with many sets of rules, I'll limit myself to MWC and Battlestations: MWC rules specifically ban raising turret height from scale, so you have to work with what nature (BuOrd) gave you. Battlestations says all guns must function from the scale turret in scale manner in scale location, which I would take to mean that BaS requires it to look stock, too. I'm definately with you on all barrels pointing the same direction/level. It looks hokey if they don't.
Note that some real battleships had their guns mounted in single sleeves, so could elevate each gun seperate from the others.
True that, but they didn't usually run around like that Too hard to spot your shots with independent barrel aim.
