HAS ANY ONE TRIED THIS OR SHOULD I NOT WASTE MY TIME? http://www.dimensionengineering.com/appnotes/spektrum_mod/spektrum_mod.htm
Im not sure, but it looks like a good idea, and worst case, you can put in the old one and run it as before.
The idea should work... I've heard many complain about the 'lossy' power regulator in those DX6s... All that little thing does is makes sure the power entering the rest of the DX is a steady 5V. However, it stands to reason that an engineer @ spectrum (or wherever they are made these days) chose that reg for a specific reason... Then again it also stands to reason it was chosen because the engineer was lazy & didn't want to look for a better part.
Marty had some trouble with this. I know a few people who have done it and have had it work for them... the engineers reason almost certainly was that the regulator they used was the cheapest. Caveat emptor
I did it on my DX6 and it rocks I haven't done an exhaustive battery life test, but it's much more than stock.
Probably right... In my world, the engineer's time is the most valuable. So if an OK solution found within minutes vs a better one that might be found within hours or days, often the OK solution is chosen. ie lazy ~ cheaper.
I have installed in in my radio's and it does help, but I still needed to replace the battery's to last all day. Best just get the pack from Visit this site and it will already have the proper connector. With one of these and the original regulator it will last all day, with both 2 days.
I bought the better battery pack from Spectrum and it still needs to be charged between sorties so I was looking thinking this would do the trick and keep me to a charge a day
What are the specs on the better battery pack from spectrum? You should really have two anyway. It only takes one failure to keep you out of the game.
The Spektrum pack capacity is very low, those 1700 mAh packs I posted for you will last all day, versus those Spektrum packs.
I don't remember the actual capacity of the originals, but I'd swear that they act like 600mAh packs. Thanks for the link to the bigger packs, David... I like my new VR, but in the spirit of overkill, I'm going to get more power
The spektrums are designed with airplanes as the primary focus in mind. That being said, long battery life isn't as important because flight times aren't as long, and thus transmitter power longevity isn't as important. I haven't had any battery issues with my Futaba 2.4 yet. Seems to run all day without issue.
I have no idea about swapping out regulators but the playing around I've done with my DX5 seems to show it lasts all day just fine with the 2500mA (camera AA) batteries I've been using. I'm not sure if I have any alkaline batteries left in the house any more, and I know I haven't had any NiCads for years now. The high capacity AA's and AAA's marketted for digital cameras are just too cheap and too powerful for me not to use them everywhere.
Maxster, you gotta understand, the DX6, and DX6i are not much like the DX5 (though the DX6i is DSM2 like the DX5). The DX6 series are basically standard (75mHz style) encoder boards with a separate little RF stage. Most of the suystem runs in 5v, with the RF stage at 3.3v, hence the separate foltage regulator on the RF stage. The main battery is a 9.6, I believe, which, full;y charged, requires a lot of reduction to get it down to 3.3v. The DX5 is based on a different encoder board system, an starts out at a lower voltage - it is designed to work on regular old AA's instead of NiCad battery packs. Apples and grapefruit, here. So the DX5 does not really work as a comparison. I am pondering doing some hacking on a spare DX5 (to try and add add end point adjustment), as, if it had EPA's it would make a nice ship radio for some of my6 circumstances. Cheers,
I have one of these and 3 receivers. I mainly run this radio in my Lindburgh 1/32nd PT boat. I want to put one in one of my R/C infrared combat tank. The other in a R/C combat vessel. There are guys in the Tank clubs out hear that swear by them. I got mine because the original owner of Sheldon's Hobbies was selling out to another person and was selling a lot of his inventory. I got mine for $160.00 and the receivers for $25.00 a piece.
This is all good advice on this as I have a new Spectrum on layaway at the local hobby store. THanks guys.
