How effetive are the tandem rudders in our great hobby? or does no one actually use them and only operate the primary rudder?
By tandem, I'm guessing you're referring to inline rudders. I know of a few people who do use them, but most make the forward (least effective one) a nub and put all the surface area on the one behind the props.
yes tandem (inline) as oppose to parallel. just curious because I have seen them on a few ships of interest including german battle cruisers and yamato
Functionally, a rudder ahead of the props is far less effective. Thrust washing over the rudder surface is primarily what pushes the hull into a turn. The only reason inlines were put on the real ships was b/c the design needed more than a single rudder (either for maneuverability or just for redundancy in case of damage), but could not go with parallel rudders for reason of hull shape/space.
I will add that for our purposes make the front rudder as small as possible and then use all the remaining rudder area to make the rear rudder as large as possible. Twin ruddered ships tend to turn slightly better than tandem, but tandem can still turn well.
altering the size like that doesn't work for Big Gun. For WWCC at least your rudders must be can be 25% larger but you cant take the rudder area of one rudder and combine it with the other. But thank yall answered the question
