This topic has been created by splitting a series of replies off of the 'Save MWC' thread that were not applicable to that topic. The first post following this one is where this thread begins.
RE: Save MWC: An open letter to the membership Greetings from Astatula, FLA: A word came forth on a non-RCNavalcombat affiliated web site Two teens said they wanted to try RC Naval combat and noted that they were going to put in a few hundred dollars each. Some captain responded with this statement "Go to another hobby." GOTOHO. There went 2 newbies. This word must NEVER be used in ANY hobby. A
RE: Save MWC: An open letter to the membership When did this happen, was it a local captain or someone on this forum?
RE: Save MWC: An open letter to the membership Greetings From Astatula FLA: The message in question was posted on a RC models site NOT affiliated with RCNavalCombat (note previous message). I read the post when I did a randon google search on RC Naval Combat. I clicked on a general RC hobby question and answer site. The reply HAD to have been a Captain since s/he noted model battleship and cruiser facts. There was NO name to the reply and I left the site since I was not going to waste my time on it. The comment is not one that came from RC Naval Combat. There may be some differences between groups but we all seem to conduct ourselves as ladies and gentlemen. A
RE: Save MWC: An open letter to the membership This is a little off topic for this thread, and I'm also worried about people trolling on another forum if the link is included here. We also don't know the whole story here. Even as owners of a business that sells products for this hobby, there are times when we have actively discouraged people from participation if they appeared to be unsafe or not in compliance with our terms of sale (being a member of a group, being 18, etc). It's rare, but we have done it.
RE: Save MWC: An open letter to the membership I am not a forum troll, I did not intend to troll any site. Instead I wanted to be able to post, if possible, and encourage the users to join this forum and perhaps the hobby.
RE: Save MWC: An open letter to the membership The location of the comment is important to know the context of the related comments, if not the veracity. Folks who read this thread wholly will note that earlier I asked people to be prepared to show evidence. If this new addition to the topic is going to be considered related information, we should know the context of it. I do not believe anyone here would want such information based on a desire to go trolling another forum. However, if no relevance to the original topic of this thread can be displayed in the next 24 hours, I will remove this section of the thread as non-contributing. At that point the discussion can continue in another thread if someone can come up with a source.

RE: Save MWC: An open letter to the membership Good Find Nick, Note that is from YEARS ago, also if you remove these non-contributing posts please feel free to remove this one as well if you feel it necessary. I would like to make a couple of points: 1)$200 isn't enough to realistically get into this hobby. Not good or bad, just how it is. This hobby is still a ton cheaper than a lot of other hobbies. Building a ship is one of the less expensive parts (contary to what you might gather from Tugboat ( ;-) I love you Tuggy) they last more than one battle, a lot of people fight the same ship for years), traveling to battles and those costs are where it really can start adding up. When I ask people if they are interested and what is keeping them from building on cost is typically not mentioned or low on the list. The amount of time/effort and skill required to build a functional combat model keeps far more people out of the hobby than the cost of the boats. 2) When I first learned that this hobby existed (~1994) I was 12-13 years old, I probably had about $50 in my bank account. (allowance? whats that? room and board/education/health care was provided what did I need money for) My best friend showed me an early internet site and we determined that this was the coolest thing since sliced bread. We knew we didn't have the money to ability to do it and we knew are parents weren't going to be on board with it so we knew it was a reality and filed it away in our brains of cool things that "adults" get to do. Then freshman year in college I was bored one weekend and decided I wanted to build a battlebot (twas all the rage those days), however I quickly learned that was well outside my college student budget. I recalled this hobby and after some searching to see if it still existed found some pages for it and got hooked! Building a ship on a college student budget was a challenge but I got it done, even managed to upgrade it a bit at a time year to year until I got a real job and could truly afford the hobby. I've been hooked on the hobby ever since. If those two kids really think RC Warship Combat is for them they'll be back, we need to focus on spreading the word that this hobby exists and helping rookies along as they learn how to build so they don't get discouraged and quit while realizing that this is a niche hobby and not everyone has the skills or money to afford it. (like so many other hobbies that do just fine)
RE: Save MWC: An open letter to the membership It was taken out of context.. make sense now. I don't know ANYONE that would tell folks to find another hobby...
RE: Save MWC: An open letter to the membership Greetings from FLA: To the moderator: I look forward to seeing this issue be pulled. I will comment on the steampunk issue on its thread. A
i know i am a noob here.and maybe I'm wrong butt, i think a few more words should have been added to the response, that could have defined the answer. rather if it was a negative response or suggestive. that's my two cents and a half...
