What club are you going to battle with, or what rules set are you using? That affects our advice...

Take Down, that Spahkreuzer was built to Big Gun rules. I don't think the Spahkreuzer is even allowed in Fast Gun clubs, because it was blown up by british bombers before they could finish construction (although the keel was laid).

In Big Gun, I believe that a torpedo-cruiser is one of the fastest ways to get started. It's simple and reliable. The downside is it's nowhere near as fun as a proper capital ship with rotating cannons. The only thing that may be easier would be a single-bb-gun destroyer, which I am working with Webwookie, Cannonman, and others to develop. For Fast Gun, though, you'll probably want something bigger than a torp-cruiser.

Cruisers are not authorized torpedoes in fast gun.

Eventually I'd like to add big gun torpedo launchers to the Tone I am wanting to build so I could run her as a big gun torpedo cruiser as well. Katori, are there any rules regarding the cannon armament being smaller then the allowed battery size? What I'm thinking of is setting up the Tone with two single bow guns for small gun use, and adding torpedo tubes to attend big gun events. For big gun would I be allowed to still use my small gun cannnons (in the 8 inch turrets) provided I meet big gun rate of fire/penetration limitations or is that a no-go, and I'd have to leave them pinned and un-used?

Yeah, that is fine. There is no problem with running a smaller caliber than you're allowed. There may be questions about ROF, but that's a minor technical issue that is club-specific.

For what it is worth, the ROF is determined by the prototype caliber at NABGO, as I believe it is in most Big Gun clubs. So, if you have .177 guns representing your 15"ers, you have an 8 second ROF. However, this may not be as draconian as it sounds.

Some clubs have rules about less barrels in a turret than allowed increasing the ROF to compensate, and if your ship had armable secondaries, you might negotiate the mains being treated as the secondaries for the purpose of ROF. Depends on the club, of course. Probably one of those "facts and circumstances" kind of things.

    Cheers,

    Wreno

I wouldnt be overly worried about the RoF limitations. Most torp cruisers from what I hear don't bother with their gun armament, so I'd look at them as more of a bonus then anything.
