I am beginning my build of the USS Colorado. Currently, I have a set of plans, 2 2x4 birch plywood sheets, some hardwood sticks to serve as a keel, and probably all of the tools I will need. Currently am drawing Rib templates from plans.
    PS its big gun format.

That is a nice size ship for Big Gun format. What are planning on arming it with, i.e., fixed cannons or rotating? Are you going to build them yourself?

I think i'll be making rotating guns. I'll probably end up buildin them as i am tight on funds

Get hooked up with the local Big Gunners, their advice will probably save you a lot of trouble and probably some money, too. If you have any trouble with drawing the ribs, don't be afraid to post or send PMs to people. All of us have done stupid things or made mistakes, and you won't get made fun of.

You know, i spent half an hour drawing out ribs. It was wasted. In the middle of my plans was an image of the front with all of the rib shapes, like you posted for pommern and edgar quinet. So far, i have 11 out of 20 rib templates cut out glued on plywood.

Chris, building big gun cannons is not an easy task. At a minimum, you should have access to a milling machine and a lathe. There are many different types of plans out there. I would recommend doing a bit of research on the cannon situation before committing to. build a big gun warship. Keep in mind that there not any commercial avenues in which you can purchase these type of cannons.

Actually, there are places that sell big gun cannnons (expensive though). For now I'm really not working on any systems, just the hull. Cheapest part. I probably won't be putting in guns for a while.

Why was it wasted? Wasn't there a drawing with the stern half of the ribs, also?

No no. I was using the side drawing and bottom drawing of the ship at first. Anyhow, all rib templates are now cut out and pasted onto plywood. Measured and cut keel, preparin to glue it together.

Sweet! It's really exciting when you put those together because it starts looking like a ship :)
