I am looking at buying a jig saw but found this and it could do the same job. http://www.harborfreight.com/electric-cutout-tool-42831.html I should be able to cut out windows, cut deck, and just about anything I need with that tool. Just wondering it it would be has handy as the jig saw. ANyone else got one?
From what I've seen, those tools will go through just about anything, although they lack precision. I'd go with a Dremel clone or one of the vibrating thingies like Stephen talks about in the article on Strike Models' website. I forget what those tools are called. But HF sells a clone of that, too. Unless you're doing a wood hull, then go with the dremel clone or an actual jigsaw.
I have a dremel some where, but we are trying to sell our house so it has been packed up and for $20 I could pick up that or a jig saw and that will get me by until we get moved and I can dig out the Dremel If those won't do the fine cutting I need I will stay away from them
Hmmm... Wait, Warhawk, you're doing a pre-cut-wood cruiser kit right? You don't really need a jigsaw for that, as the wood's been cut already, and the vibrating cutter thingy is also not highly useful at that point. I'd get the Dremel clone.
Warhawk, I have one of this type, a multi-max from Dremel. I actually have the Rigid one, but can't find it on the Home Depot website. http://www.dremel.com/en-us/Tools/Pages/Multi-Max.aspx?pid=Multi-Max Just hang on fairly tight to it as it can go on a walk-about if you don't. The big advantage is I don't have to wear a full face shield like I did with a rotory tool. The saw you show here is great for cutting holes in wood or drywall but it would be difficult to use on a fiberglass hull I think. My 2 cents ( minus appropriate taxes) J
What is a precut wood cruiser kit?? I never heard of it. I was toying with the idea of doing a wood Takao (love that CA) in the future as opposed to fiberglass just to do a wood hull but this is interresting. Any info?? J
There is a gentleman somewhere in/near Ohio that recently entered the hobby last year. He is very talented with CAD work and has been desgining wood parts layouts for small ships and getting them laser cut. His work is impressive! He got a small handful of Baltimore kits laser cut out. They are works of art.
The Baltimore kits are mine, you can see some details at http://www.jenkse.us/rcengr/index_files/Page896.htm Currently I only have one of the initial run of kits left. I've made some improvements to the fit of the parts and have another 4 kits on order with the laser cutters. Once they get caught up from Christmas break I should get them, as well as the prototype for my next kit. It's a British/American CVE, not an axis CA, but who knows what the future holds. Mark
LOL, if only my mod powers were strong enough to do THAT. @Mark - Wow. Looking at the pictured Balti on your site, I thought, that'd be cool to get just to have a piece of wood ART sitting on the mantel!! Very very well done. I think you'll find a market if/when you do more. If you need axis hull recommendations please don't hesitate to call/write/talk into the soup can
Mark, Very nice!! I look forward to seeing some Axis (real) warships in the future nudge, nudge, hint, hint. J
