We have not gotten any commitment from the fast-gun groups for
attending the Memorial Day weekend multi-format event in Xenia,
Ohio, to battle in between our sorties.
So at this time, we are offering up an invite to all of the
    big-gun groups to attend.
We have some new folks that are interested in seeing a big-gun
battle, and have more interests in building ships to the big-gun
    rules.
If you are interested in attending, please contact me at
    MDeskin@aol.com
    Thanks.

Title: Combat boat display at Waco museum in Troy, Ohio

Date: July 9-11, 2010 Friday, Saturday, Sunday
    Time: All Day
    Location: WACO air museum
    Street: 1865 S. County Rd 25A
City State Zip: Troy, Ohio 45373
    Phone: (937)-620-6053
Notes: Waco air museum has invited us out to dsiplay the boats at their military experience event.
We are hoping to set up a bunch of tables, and display lots of combat boats.
They also have a small pond on-site, and we are thinking about trying to have a couple of un-armed boats with pumps, and some battle damage so that the spectators (especially the kids)can run around the pond until the boats sink. We are still working on this idea.
This is a rather large military re-enactment event here in Ohio, with lots of military vehicles, and re-enactors in attendance.
We are planning to treat this just like a battle in our area, where the locals will try to put-up any of the out-of-towners that can attend, in order to keep the costs down.
In the evenings we might do some building, or have some war-game tournaments, or something fun like that.
If you know of any re-enactors, feel free to invite them out as well.

Starting in August, pretty much all of the combat events that I will be hosting in Ohio will be multi-format with both Treaty, and the MBG taking part.
The two formats will take turns battling sorties.
So all Big-gunners will be invited as well.
There has been some interest in big-gun in the past here in our area.
Now we are seeing some building.
Now we just need to get some battles scheduled.

Some of the Dayton area locals put up a table display at the DOGS Dayton Ohio Giant Scale R/C event this past weekend at the Wright-Pat AF museum.
The weather wasn't exactly perfect for flying at times, so we had a lot of folks stop in during the breaks in the flying stuff to see what we were about.
It was a great time, and we met a lot of folks.
We have a possible build-session coming up this weekend here in the Dayton area. And we will be displaying the boats at the WACO museum on the weekends
    of September 18, and 25.

We had a really great time at the build-session yesterday.
Scott arrived first with his V.U.
So we got started on installing the cannons, and CO2 delivery systems.
This very cool looking little ship is coming along nicely, and looks fantastic as well.
Phil showed up with his new British project, and has the sub-deck installed, and started working on the decks.
Mark arrived with one of his brand new Baltimore hull kits assembled, and we all drooled all over it.
This thing is a true work of art.
He started working on the superstructure stuff for the ship kit.
Dustin dropped in with his big-gun Richelieu class battleship.
This ship is also looking great, and coming along nicely.
The main cannons are installed, and he was working on his CO2 delivery system.
We watched They were expendable, Flying leathernecks, and Where eagles dare.
It was a grand old time, watching war flicks, talking up the boats, and working on them as well.
Eventually, Mark and I started in on the ship list, and made some really good progress.
It was way too cool adding some of the hypothetical ships in like the Lyon, Mackensens, Lexington class battlecruisers, and WW1 era South Dakota.
The weather was great, so it wasn't too hot in the boat shop.
It was nice to get back to the build-sessions after taking the last few weeks off doing other things.
I look forward to the next time we get together.
Thanks to all that made it out.
    Mikey

Phil and I were able to display the boats at the WACO museum on
    Saturday.
The weather was great, and they had a nice turn-out.
We passed out quite a few fliers.
We also had some veterans drop in to talk about their military service experiences.
One was on the USS Saratoga (WW2). One was on a Liberty ship. One was on a destroyer escort. One was on one of the Missouri class battleships.
One was one an auxiliary replenishment oiler that was the sister-ship to the USS Savannah AOR-4 (which was the ship I was on).
One that we found most interesting, was a gentleman that flew CAP flights over Martinique, and actaully saw the French aircraft-carrier Bearn.
We were shocked when he was able to name the ship (which we were displaying). That is perhaps the one ship that we display, that almost nobody is familiar with.
It was a great time, and a true learning experience for us both.

How do you determine what ships are legal? is it year of design, year ordered, or year laid? In addition, what would you do in instances where a ship was never laid or where a ship was laid, but never completed?

As long as the ship was at least authorised for construction between 1895 to 1946 is is OK.
So the keel didn't have to be laid down. And the ship did not have to be completed.
So if the ship was completed, launched, laid down, or ordered, then they are pretty easy to find info on.
The ones that were authorised are a little harder to find info on, but you just need to know where to dig.

We had a build-session in Pleasant Hill yesterday.
It was a great time indeed. Well.. They always are. Boaters getting together in one place to talk up the boats, and work on them. And watching some war movies to boot.
I was able to get out to the shop early, and make a little progress on the Lutzow. She is ready for sea trials.
Dustin showed up with his big-gun Richelieu.
His big Frenchie is almost raedy for sea trials. Main cannons are installed. Superstructure in almost complete.
He was working on finishing up the superstructure, and mounting the barrels, and depression servos on the cannons. Also the CO2 sysytem.
This boat is coming along nicely, and will be on the water in the near future.

Phil showed up with his new Liberty ship.
The hull, and superstructure is almost complete, and is looking very nice. We discussed some ideas on how to implement the convoy ships into the scenario battles so that both teams will have the ability to generate convoy points, in case no warships sink.
I would say that this convoy ship will be on the water running missions at the October battle.

I broke out my old Bearn, and got some work done on her. She is being armed with cannons so that we will be able to see how the new rule concerning the wider bow and stern quadrants in the carriers work out.
The cannons are installed, and almost plumbed. Drive system is complete, and rudders are linked up.
I intend to have this ship ready for the October battle as well.

Kevan was able to drop in as well. He is looking through the books at some of the ships to see what he wants to build.
He seems most interested in some sort of fast-capitalship, of moderate size.
We discussed the Alaska, Kronstadt, Scharnhorst, Dutch battlecruisers, and a few others at length. And the Soyuz, Richelieu, Dunkerque, Roma, Kongo, and a few others entered into the discussions in general. As did the German P-cruiser.
It didn't occur to me to bring up the German O-class battlecruisers.
But we did discuss the Gniesenau after being converted over the twin 15" guns.
It was great fun discussing all of the ships, and rating them against one-another.
The old DVD player got a good work-out during the course of the day.
We watched Transformers 2, In harm's way, Pale rider, and probably one that I can't recall.
The girls brought out large bowls of chili, with sandwiches, cheese, and crackers, for a late lunch. Which was really great. Not just the food. But the timeing as well.
My boat shop is not all that big. And I didn't want to mention Blazing saddles. Especially after the wild bunch had a healthy helping of chili.
We were all looking forward to having Mark drop in at the shop. But unfortunately, he was not able to make it.
So eventually, we had to break up the festivities, and all go our seperate ways. Some of us in a funk. Due in part to the end of a fun day (on one hand), and perhaps the chili (on the other).

    Heard from Josh.
He is meeting with the German gentleman today about scheduling the build-session in Cinci, so that he can attend.
He mentioned either the weekend after Thanksgiving, or possibly the first weekend in December. But he should have a date set later today.
    I will post up-dates.

    The build-session went well yesterday.
Turn-out was low, mainly due to such short notice. Sorry about that.
Phil dropped in with his Indefatigable British battlecruiser.
It is coming along nicely. The deck is in place, as is most of the superstructure. Some of the running gear is installed as well.
I am looking forward to seeing this ship out on the water next year.
It will be a nice addition to the British fleet. And also be there when we try some of the WW1 battles like Dogger Bank.
    Very nice looking little ship.

I started out working on double-checking some of the measurements on the plans that I have for my Alaska class battlecruiser.
I am getting ready to cut the deck out, and want to figure out where the breaks in the deck will be, so that they do not conflict with the cannon placement, so that I have easy access to the inside of the hull.
This very cool looking, and interesting ship will be a nice addition to the US fleet in particular, but also to the allied fleet, as it will give them some sidemounts on a platform with unusually high speed. Something that the allies are currently lacking for the most part.

Mark showed up with his lap-top and books.
So we dug into them, and got to work on the Treaty ship-list.
We made a lot of progress, and had some pretty good laughs, and interesting discussions about some of the ships that we have not seen out on the water so far. Especially the hypotheticals.

It was a good time hanging out with friends, and working on the boats.

Josh tells me that the German gentleman will be at a build-session in Cinci this coming Saturday December 4.
He is the guy that was on one of the German pocket-battleships during WW2.
I will post more info on the time, and location shortly.
