Nothing that you are likely to be able to assemble yourself (not that you're not intelligent, you just don't have experience) is going to do better than that $399 one you linked to. And just getting the plastic parts of a reprap printed and buying the rest and assembling it... will be close enough to $399 that you will be sitting there cursing and wondering why you didn't buy the ready-to-go printer at the nice cheap price. SERIOUSLY. Take the word of a man who's built two repraps (one totally from scratch)... you will not save time nor money building a reprap yourself unless you have done it before.
