Good evening all, I have an Iowa class hull which I am about to start working on. I am looking for suggestions / recommendations on how to build a skeg. Any help that ya'll may be able to offer would be most appreciated. Ken
Check the build thread for the Montana. There are excellent pics of how the skegs were made and attached. My Iowa build thread has pics of the skegs I made but if your looking for finess then the Montana build thread has beautiful skegs. Mine are not so thin but they are robust and solid. You can make the skegs out of 2 wood halves cut to shape then sandwiched over the stuffing tube and sealed to the hull , or you can cut out slots in the hull to insert your skegs through and seal from the inside out. I am not explaiining to well here but defiinitely check out the Montana thread.
The ship was eventually named the Ohio, since it was built mostly by a bunch of guys in Ohio. Here's the thread http://rcnavalcombat.com/Forum/tabi...fault.aspx. The skegs are pretty early in the build, about March of 2011.
<p>Thanks Mark, the pictures are great!!! I sent froggyfrenchman a PM to get a bit more info before I make my attempt.
I recommend giving Charles a call too. His experience with building and then operating his USS Missouri for a decade will probably be valuable. He can show you what he did and tell you what he wishes he did.
I may be able to scan a diagram of how to make the skegs and post it here. It's for a 1/200 scale Sterling Model of the MO. The principal is the same for our scale of 1/144. I had misplaced this when I was building mine but maybe you can use it to help you. I will try to get it out there today or tomorrow at least.
