If you're interested in an attractive cruiser, a Prinz Eugen is a large, roomy (therefore easy to build) one (3.5 units, same as Deutchland). If you desire a bit more firepower, consider a Derfflinger class battlecruiser (4.5 units).
Are you dead set on cruisers, or is a battlecruiser possible? There's not a lot of difference cost-wise between a 3-gun cruiser and a 3.5-gun battlecruiser.
I've been looking at everything from Rcengr's CVE kit to the USS Maryland. I'm enlisted in the US Navy and I'd like to build something american.
Welcome Matt; Sorry that it has taken so long to chime in. Been away of late. I notice that you did memtion BIG GUNS in one of your posts. The Mid Atlantic Battle Group (a BIG GUNs group) does have a battling pond between Newport News and Hampton. Though our members are located through out the state of Virginia. Welcome to the hobby and I hope that you find some good friends here.
Ugh!!! I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what ship to get. I love the look of RCENGR's Baltimore kit, but I'd like to go Big Gun some day and it doesn't have torpedos. Honestly the Graf Spee is ugly. I really like the look of the Prinz Eugen hull from Battlers Connection, but I really want something american. It'd be cool to do a USS Flint, but it might be a little too small to start with. I'm in love with the USS Maryland, but it's too expensive. And through this all my wife is shaking her head and telling me it's stupid to spend money on an rc ship while she's getting starbucks every day and we have a perfectly good espresso maker at home. Okay, vent over. I need some ideas for a good american ship to start with. I'm probably going to start fast because it's cheaper, then go big with the guns when I get some money.
Hey Matt; One thing we talk about in our BIG GUNS circle is: The biggest cost to a build is the cannons. There is no rule that states that you must arm all turrets! I understand that we have had some under age captains running battleships without any turrets. So why not go with the Maryland and arm her later. Just a thought.
Welcome matt, I love the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet Boeing and the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Nikki
Welcome Matt, I am also new to this hobby, but I do have my first ship in the drydocks currently being built. It's a Baltimore Class Heavy Cruiser, and though it's racking my brain on how to build her, it's a fun challenge for me. I keep jumping from either just fiberglass her bottom or do plywood and then fiberglass. I do tend to travel to Va Beach from time to time and if i'm ever in the area and ya want to battle let me know.
Misguided1, were did you get her from?? If you got her from Mark, He might be able to build one for her! Nikki
Hi Matt; You keep making me think of my God Son. He states that there is not an F-18 out there that does not have his name somewhere on it's engine. He lives in your neck of the woods, but I have been able to talk him into joining our hobby. As for a ship, check around for a used boat or a loaner from the club you join. That way you will something to sail while "your" boat is in dry dock.
Success! I have been authorized exclusive use of the credit card's cash rewards to fund my navy! So far I have $225. I'm so excited!
Strike now while the iron is hot! Buy the admiralty those galley upgrades they've long desired! Got to spend money to make money!
Start looking at all the ships and choose which one is best for you. Me personally, Im working on a Heavy Cruiser, Allied side of course, after that one i'm undecided to either do a carrier or battleship.
