I have seen biodegradable airsoft pellets. I'm not sure how the ballistics compare with other pellets, though...

^ yes i have used those. shoots pretty similar to the regular ones.

And yes the bb's do float. Forgot about that. May be the death of this idea.

-Tugboat. Im not going to be useing the gun in my cruiser. But rather to see if it would fit in turret.

I am not familiar with the Airsoft weapons, would it be possible to modify one to fire 1/4 shot? 6 Mm is very close in size to 1/4... only a bit over .010" smaller...... the ammo handling portions couldn't be opened up a little?

Most barrels are brass. The stock ones from the factory are 6.08mmIDx about 8mmOD. Tightbores are 6.05-6.00mm.
At the breach, there is a cut out top of the barrel. Then a rubber sleeve slips over the end. It holds the bb in place.
A small arm Push's down through the cut out in the barrel, down through the rubber sleeve, when the bb is shot through tthis, it puts a backspin on the bb, making it fly much farther.

The loading assembly; the magazines are spring feed. They are pushed up into a hop up unit. Looks like a T. Picture this,The bottem is where the BBs feed in from. The right is the barrel, and rubber sleeve (hop up bucking). The left would be where the nozzle(piston for your bb cannons) is. It is spring loaded and gear driven.

    I'll find some pictures

To answer your question. Yes. Would prolly need to make a larger nozzle. Everything else internally prolly has enough slop to fit 1/4".

That's why I'm interested in this thread. It's been proven that the full-on airsoft weapons can penetrate the balsa. We need to get one cut down to a size that would fit in a turret and see if the shorter barrel would affect the penetration, and how much the accuracy is affected.

Ok airsoft guys, what's the closest weapon out there to meeting our needs without costing a fortune, and another that would be a good starting point to do internal mods on (ie cheap and easily accessable, even if not much power...but something that would be similar to the one with enough power that may cost more if that makes sense) I can try to get one and experiment.

^ That would prolly blow a hole straight through the blast shielding

I would say the best chance is a electric pistol. Super reliable, no gas needed. Like all things, china has cloned some of the hot Japan electric guns for fractions of $. What you are looking for is a Tokyo Marui AEP "CLONES". NOT "EBB"
A Company, CYMA, makes a Clone Glock 18C, its named a CM030. Take that, dremel off everything foward of the trigger, minus the inner barrel. They also make a SigP226, named the CM122. Believe that is cheaper.
Its battery is cleverly tucked under the innerbarrel, 7.2V 500mah. Covered by a dummy slide, that pops on and off. You get about 300shots from a full charge. However, it would be practical to hook it straight to the ships main battery.
Would need some contraption to servo pull the trigger back, OR have some sort of Board to activate the trigger contact points.
At 210fps out the barrel, it may be alittle low powered. Plenty of upgrade parts exist to raise that number.
I believe its Barrel is about 4" long. Accuracy is very good to about 15yards(shooting pop cans). After that the groupings open up. The hop-up (backspin) system on these guns are wonderful. I had a Tokyo marui USP AEP, it would shoot out to 170ft. However at that distance, you can watch the bb's float past you slowly.

OR, jump on ebay, find the cheapest smallest pistol, make sure it has a fixed slide, and hack it apart. These are very low powered, no aftermarket parts either. Would be just to tinker with
If someone wants to go the CO2 route. Look for a fixed slide. These shoot hot, +350FPS. You would have to detune them.

Lastly. There are youtube Videos of airsoft guns being shot after submerged in water. They still do work. But drasticly less powered
