I hope that experience sailing small craft transfers to RC square-riggers. I figured that a frigate would be the ideal size, not a massive ship of the line, nor a tiny dinghy, but a nice compromise. It would be about 41 inches by 9 inches by 4.5 inches, if I'm right (I'm looking here- http://koti.mbnet.fi/felipe/html/24_pdrs_.html , and it says feet OR meters, and since the length is 51.97, I'm asuming it has to be meters.) Sounds fun!
Indeed. I forget how big Minerva is off the top of my head, but length (not counting bowsprit) is between 3 and 4 feet. Get building! LOL -I did find that the Eagle Seamanship book by the USCG Academy is very useful for learning aspects of squarerigger sailing that more conventional sailors don't get exposed to (backhauling, for example). Linky: www.amazon.com/Eagle-Seamanship-Man...ref=sr_1_1 Plus it just makes you look saltier just carrying it around
I think I should finish Jean Bart before I start Jeanne d'Arc, else I'll start sliding down the slippery slope...
Hahahaha!!! At the bottom of that slope, you'll find me, surrounded by projects that need finishing!!
Too bad you went down, but it sure was fun, wasn't it? If you're interested, Joe, I have some plans for the Golden Hind. Beaver
Oh, is it that much fun...? Maybe I should start the half a million projects that I want to do so I can be GLORIOUS too. Nah, that would be too much work. Beaver
I think the Golden Hind would be a good ship... 2 feet long (1.5 ft WL), 5 in beam, ~6 pounds, 8 guns, And an awesome history of course, And I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it had oars, didn't it? Because that would be cool. Anyways, that would be great Beaver, unless you're planning on building one.
She would be really hard to arm, and if she originally had 8 guns, she'd get a lot less in our rules. But she'd be really hard to arm at that size, regardless. Ask Mike M about his Xebec, about that size.
Even with a large shop and an understanding significant other, it's not always glorious, let me tell you!
I meant 8 guns under the rules, it had 22. And I've looked at the Le Requin build thread, which was what made me think it was viable. I can't find Jeanne d'Arc plans anywhere, so I don't think it's a possibility. If you think the Golden Hind is to small, I could look for another ship; but I thought it would be a cool ship. (But I am extremely new to this)
You know it would be nice if there was a guide for choosing a AoS ship. I mean, there's a lot of material on the subject for other formats, but not really for AoS. Of course, thats probably because this format is new, but still, I bet you could write some rough guidelines?
What do you think of the Whydah Galley? I don't think there are plans for it, but I think it would be cool.
Some rough guide-lines, eh. Hmmmm, build a big ship that is heavy and has lots of cannons. I also have plans for the French galleon Santísima Trinidad. She carried 54 cannons, so she would have only twelve cannons in Aos. I'm not quite sure how heavy she would be, but I'm sure she would have plenty of weight. Here is a link to a guy building a beautiful model of one. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1213742 Check out this thread that I started a while back for some ideas on a good starter ship. There are also a lot of links to some great starer ship plans. http://rcnavalcombat.com/Forum/tabid/58/afv/topic/aff/592/aft/443140/afpg/1/Default.aspx Beaver
Actually, that guy is building the 1st Rate Spanish Santisima, not the French galleon. Even so, it is impressively built.
Oops, those plans are for the 1st rate Santísima Trinidad. And the other Santísima Trinidad was not French, but Spanish also. Yesterday must have been my day for making mistakes. Beaver
I was quite confused, but it makes sence now. I think a 4 deck 140 gun 1st rate is a wee bit to big for me.
